The free workshop, scheduled on Friday, May 2, from 4:00 to -5:45 p.m. in Room 405 of the Student Business Services Building at 1 Harpst Street, will provide instruction in Value Stream Mapping, a tool that traces a product’s production path from beginning to end, and pinpoints where waste is occurring. It is a “lean” planning tool that enables a manufacturer to visualize the entire value stream of a process, department or organization. It tracks all of the activities involved in bringing a product from its raw material state to customer use.
The technique is used in lean manufacturing to map the flow of both materials and data, revealing the linkages between the two and fostering better decision making. The HSU session is introductory and titled “Value Stream Mapping: First Step for Continuous Improvement.” Attendees will learn how to draw current and future Value Stream Maps and how to carry out step-by-step implementation. The course will be taught by Cyrus Raoufi, head of the manufacturing program at Humboldt State’s Department of Applied Technology.
A select number of matches will be made at the May 2 session to link students and businesses in summer projects and lend student and faculty support to companies participating in the creation of a Value Stream Map. The projects also will involve selection of appropriate tools for first-round improvements and development of an implementation plan.
