HSU Hosts Veterans Day Events

Arcata – Humboldt State University’s new Office of Veterans Enrollment and Transition Services (V.E.T.S.) will host a full roster of events to mark Veterans Day Week.

They will begin Monday, Nov. 10 at 2:00 p.m. in Goodwin Forum with San Francisco’s Sword to Plowshares and its program of “Cultural Competency” for both veterans and non-veterans. It addresses the basics of military and veteran culture and ways of life.

That same day in the same location, a student/faculty panel will explore “Diversity Within the Veteran Demographic,” at 4:00 p.m.

Nov. 10 events will conclude with the Academy Award-winning movie “Saving Private Ryan,” to be shown at 6:00 p.m. to non-veteran students, with a discussion to follow, in Harry Griffith Hall, Room 106. Kim Hall, V.E.T.S. Director, and four HSU veteran students, will lead a discussion of media representations of war and military life.

A ribbon-cutting to inaugurate the new V.E.T.S. Office is scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 2:00 p.m. in the Lower Library. Speakers will include President Rollin Richmond, Vice President Steven Butler and Registrar Hillary Dashiell. Arcata Mayor Mark Wheetley will present a proclamation to President Richmond.

Also Wednesday, an “Appreciation of American Veterans” by local vets Gayle Olson-Raymer and Travis Holt is set for 4:00 p.m. in Founders Hall Room 118. A second movie, “We Were Soldiers,” will be screened at 6:00 p.m. in Harry Griffith Hall, Room 106.

HSU Vets Week will wrap up on Thursday, Nov. 13, with two events: a Goodwin Forum discussion at 2:00 p.m., “How to Make Humboldt State More Military-Friendly,” followed by the screening of “Jarhead” for non-veteran students at 6:00 p.m. in Harry Griffith Hall, Room 106.
