The program, including hands-on physical training, is titled “Women’s Introduction to Self-Defense” and will be presented under the auspices of S.A.F.E., the national Self-defense Awareness and Familiarization Exchange (http://www.nsdi.org/safe/htm). The S.A.F.E. program is a crime prevention course that educates women in realistic approaches to avoid, escape and survive assaults. Physical training includes demonstration techniques and familiarizes participants with the use of physical force.
HSU’s Jodie Baker, a R.A.D./S.A.F.E. instructor, and Zan Mendonca of the University Police Department, will teach female participants only. R.A.D. stands for Rape Aggression Defense Training, designed specifically for women to protect themselves against assaults and abductions. The course begins with instruction in awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, and then proceeds to hands-on defense training. Women are taught when and when not to use force in self-defense and trained to be effective in confrontational circumstances.
Space is limited for the March 24th class and sign-up is available during regular business hours at the front window of the University Police Department in the Student Business Services Building, first floor. Sign-up also is available online at http://training.humboldt.edu/Training_calendar.php.
