“We are very excited about offering these two new professional degrees that will help working adult learners fulfill their academic goals,” says Alex Hwu, associate vice president for the College of eLearning and Extended Education. “At the same time, HSU can now offer more of our affordable and high quality programs to students all over the nation.”
The MA in Applied Anthropology is designed to prepare students to apply anthropological methods, theories and perspectives to a variety of academic and non-academic careers in such fields as historic preservation, forensics and international development.
The new program begins with a five-week Summer Institute held June 30-Aug. 1 on the HSU campus, where students will gain hands-on experience working in the university’s archaeology and biological anthropology laboratories and simulated archaeology site.
Following the institute, students will take 30 units of online coursework either full-time (over three, 10-unit semesters) or part-time (over six, 4-6 unit semesters). Courses will include intro to applied anthropology, anthropology in practice, theory in applied anthropology and project design & management. Students will gain additional hands-on experience through an applied internship and faculty-guided thesis project.
The Leadership Studies Program is designed for working professionals who have completed at least 60 college units, including the general education transfer package for the California State University system. The program is fully online and consists of ten courses designed to develop students into dynamic, innovative leaders.
The major consists of the following courses: foundations of leadership, data-driven leadership, leadership communication, strategic planning/forecasting, project implantation/evaluation, managing employees/stakeholders, strategic sustainability, technology and leadership, developing dynamic organizations and a capstone project. Over the course of the program, students will complete a personal leadership project, culminating with a presentation in the capstone course. Degree requirements include 18 additional units of electives plus the upper division general education requirements.
Both programs are pending WASC approval. Plans are also underway to roll out additional online professional degrees and certificates in the near future. For more information, visit humboldt.edu/extended.
