Titled “Doin’ It: Sex, Disability and Videotape,” the 35-minute film explores the rarely-discussed connections between disability and sexuality. It will be followed by a group discussion led by Associate Director of Human Resources Nancy Resnick, who has taught classes on disability awareness and other diversity issues.
“Doin’ It” was produced by the Empowered Fe Fes, a Chicago-based group of women ages 16 to 24 with various disabilities. Daring and often funny, the film challenges the notion that the disabled are not fully sexual beings. The viewer tags along on a date of a disabled woman and her able-bodied boyfriend, exploring relationship issues over a candle-lit dinner. Some of the more humorous scenes include the Fe Fes learning how to put on condoms without having to use their hands and visiting a feminist sex shop.
The film won Best Documentary (Short) at the San Francisco Women's Film Festival in 2008.
After the screening, attendees will have an opportunity to explore their own attitudes and develop insights in a workshop anchored by Resnick, who taught diversity training in the Bay area and led a counterpart workshop at HSU last March.
The Oct. 7 event is sponsored by the HSU Office of Diversity and Inclusion and Housing and Dining. It will be held in the Great Hall of the new College Creek Apartments that opened in August. The event is free and light refreshments will be served.
RSVPs are encouraged but not required. Information and sign-up are posted at http://training.humboldt.edu/Training_calendar.php.
