The multi-pronged system includes visual, auditory and electronic messages to alert as many people as possible that the system is being tested. The test is strictly a drill; there will be no evacuation.
Alerts include “Test Today” sandwich boards at prominent locations around campus, notices on the HSU Homepage, announcements on 826-INFO and KHSU 90.5 FM, and text messages transmitted to registered cell phones. Activation of the Emergency Public Address System will be in progress 11:50 and 11:55 a.m.
The public address system will broadcast electronic alert high-low tones, a spoken message and a concluding “all clear” tone. White strobe lights will flash from various rooftop locations.
HSU Alert will send text messages to people who have registered their mobile phone number in myHumboldt. Signing up for HSU Alert is easy and is free of charge, though your service provider may charge for text messages. Registered numbers will only be used to alert users to emergency campus conditions. HSU is conducting its emergency alert system test in conjunction with the Tsunami Warning Communications Test for Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino Counties. The Eureka National Weather Service will be testing various television, radio and siren emergency alert systems (EAS) from 11:00 am to noon. The systems are tested every March and should not affect or interrupt the HSU campus. For more information on the Tsunami alert test, click here
