The national competition pits undergraduate students from around the country against each other to see who can rack up the most points. Students answer questions on a variety of wildlife subjects, ranging from taxonomy to wildlife management.
HSU’s winning team came out on top with a final score of 210-35, defeating schools that included the University of Tennessee, the University of Georgia, Murray State, and the University of Maine.
Individual students also earned victories. Natalie McNear took home the People’s Choice award and first place in the reptile/amphibian photo category, and Annie Meyer won first for Best Landscape photo and Best Invertebrate.
Humboldt State has a long history of Quiz Bowl wins. Every year, students prepare for the competition by taking a 3-unit class that includes presentations and mock tournaments.
The annual event is hosted by The Wildlife Society, an educational, nonprofit for wildlife professionals and students. This year’s event took place at the Wildlife Society’s annual conference.
Winners receive one plaque that is displayed at The Wildlife Society headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, and one plaque to display at their school.
