Humboldt State University’s Fulkerson Recital Hall has been closed temporarily for the immediate and permanent repair of a cracked wooden truss beam that apparently succumbed to age and seismic activity. The closure includes the audiovisual booth in the Department of Music Building.
A structural engineer recommended the repair following a full inspection. The schedule for strengthening and seismic reinforcement is estimated at one to six weeks, depending on the time required for design, fabrication and installation of the requisite parts.
The hall overlooks the Art Quad opposite the Van Duzer Theater.
The Fall 2013 semester begins August 26 and campus officials are preparing for adjustments if needed to Fulkerson class and performance schedules.
Under a student initiative, Fulkerson is being retrofitted with energy-saving lighting fixtures that when finished are projected to slash the building’s energy use by 85%.
