Humboldt State Named an NVIDIA GPU Education Center

Humboldt State University today announced that it has been named a GPU Education Center by NVIDIA, the world leader in visual computing.

GPU Education Centers are recognized universities which have integrated GPU computing techniques into their curriculum. GPU computing leverages parallel processing capabilities of GPU accelerators and enabling software to deliver dramatic increases in performance for scientific, data analytics, engineering, consumer and enterprise applications.

Humboldt State was recognized for its commitment to advancing the state of parallel programming education.

“Our approach to computer science is centered on a rigorous and balanced core of both theoretical and practical knowledge about computation. The benefits of the GPU Education Center program will enhance the education in that core, and reach every student in our program,” says Scott Burgess, professor of Computer Science at Humboldt State. “We believe in actively engaging our students through laboratory experiences, and I am excited to employ NVIDIA’s technology this coming fall.”

The Computer Science Department at Humboldt State offers a unique program emphasizing computational thinking and active learning. The curriculum presents students with a broad and deep core program experience augmented by opportunities for collaboration and self-directed learning.

“Humboldt is dedicated to teaching advanced programming techniques on emerging technologies. The support from NVIDIA will be a big benefit to the students in our computer science program,” says Professor Jeff Haag, chair of the Computer Science Department.

As a GPU Education Center, Humboldt State will have access to NVIDIA GPU hardware and NVIDIA parallel programming experts and resources, including educational webinars, an array of teaching materials, and access to the NVIDIA CUDA Cloud Training Program.

“Students will work with state-of-the-art GPU technology,” says Burgess. “This will prepare them to join a fast-paced workforce where being familiar with the latest technologies is essential.”

Humboldt State was founded as a teacher’s college in 1913. Now, as part of the 23-campus California State University system, it offers a full range of degree programs, including Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics & Astronomy, Biology and much more. Annually, the northern California campus enrolls nearly 8,500 students.
