Humboldt State's 100th Birthday Festival, Aug 24. on Arcata Plaza

Humboldt State University's yearlong Centennial Celebration kicks off Saturday, Aug. 24, with a 100th Birthday Festival on the Arcata Plaza from 4-7pm. The free event is hosted by the Arcata Chamber of Commerce, Arcata Main Street and the City of Arcata.

The Humboldt State 100th Birthday Festival honors the strong connection between the campus and community. It features a range of “old-fashioned” entertainment for the whole family, much of it presented by popular community groups.

The event begins two hours after the conclusion of the Arcata Plaza Farmer’s Market. However, some events and activities including the daylong musical performances will overlap.

Among the many highlights of the Festival:

  • Artisan demos by Blue Ox Millworks, Humboldt Hardware and Monument Settings
  • Free birthday cookies
  • Forget-Me-Not Photo Booth with historical backdrops
  • Kids Zone with hands-on activities by the Discovery Museum and HSU Natural History Museum
  • Fire truck rides by the Arcata Fire Department
  • Antique car display by Harper Motors
  • Appearance by the Marching Lumberjacks
  • Live music by five bands, organized by Humboldt Folklife Society
  • Puppet shows and strolling performers
  • Much More

Student radio station KRFH will be on hand to cover the event, the HSU Bookstore will have Centennial-themed goods for sale, and KHSU will have a special sale of old records.

A number of local restaurants will offer special grab-and-go meals, including; Pasta Luego, Luke’s Joint, The Alibi and Café Brio.

Humboldt State Athletics will host an afternoon of softball fun prior to the start of the kick-off event on the plaza. From noon to 4pm, the community is invited to participate in a “pick up” style game and learn softball skills from HSU coaches and players at the Crabs Field.

Looking ahead, Humboldt State’s Homecoming & Family Weekend celebrates the Centennial Sept 27-28. The weekend features a Clubs Fair and Centennial Parade around the Arcata Plaza on Friday. On Saturday, the campus hosts a tailgate party before the football game vs. Dixie State.

Humboldt State University thanks its Centennial Year sponsors. Gold sponsors include; Blue Lake Casino, GHD and the North Coast Journal.
