Hundreds Gather to Remember Accident Victims

Hundreds gathered on the UC Quad Thursday for a remembrance event in the early afternoon, and later for a candlelight vigil. The gatherings marked one week since the I-5 bus accident in which 10 perished and more than 30 were injured.

The afternoon event included singing by students of the Mad River Transit Singers. Speaking at the event was CSU Chancellor Timothy White, CSU Trustee Larry Norton, HSU President Rollin Richmond, HSU Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Peg Blake, and Heidi Moore from the Humboldt County Office of Education. The talks included a reading of the poem “Tragedy and Flowering,” which was written in memory of the accident by California’s Poet Laureate, Juan Felipe Herrera.

The evening vigil included student, staff and community speakers, as well as an opportunity for anyone to share their thoughts. Candles remained lit until after a moment of silence at exactly one week after the accident, and then were all blown out in memory of those lost.
