Pledge donors who call in or contribute online will be able to adopt and name one of the live coho salmon that enter Freshwater Creek, a tributary of Humboldt Bay, to spawn. The donation will benefit both KHSU and the Council in its quest to guard local salmon fisheries.

“Each adopted fish that enters our Freshwater Creek facility will be identified, measured, tagged and immediately released to continue its upstream migration,” said Doug Kelly, the Council’s executive director. “The tag technology allows us to track and log the fish’s movements continuously throughout the spawning season. The data are crucial to us to understand the behaviors and habitat needs of these animals so we can help them to thrive for future generations.”

KHSU General Manager Elizabeth Hans McCrone added, “Our partnership with the Council to help protect the local salmon resource could not come at a more important time. We hear dire news every day about the condition of the fisheries industry and wonder what we can do about it. Well, the Adopt- A-Salmon program is something positive we can do.”

The theme of the spring pledge drive is KHSU: Connecting the Community for More Than 47 Years. The station will feature local non-profit “pledge partners” and promote the services they provide to residents throughout the North Coast community.
