New Chief Takes Over HSU International Center

Humboldt State University Provost Robert Snyder has appointed Dr. Rebecca S. Brown Director of the HSU International Center.

Brown, Director of International Programs and Senior International Officer at the University of Idaho, Moscow, since 2008, has extensive experience in international management of student marketing and recruitment; study abroad and associated risk management; international student, scholar and faculty services; intensive English as a Second Language Program; international and intercultural programming; and international grant initiatives. Her recruitment efforts at the University of Idaho included establishing an office in Beijing with four sub-branches in different regions of China.

From 2001 to 2008, Brown was Director of the International Studies Office at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Also a member of the general faculty, she presided over an increase in the student population studying overseas to 2,000 from 600. She also bolstered faculty-led study abroad programs, risk management for study abroad, international student and scholar services, and intercultural programming. Additional duties included chairing the University-wide Financial Aid Committee 2003-2008, and serving as Legislative Advisor to the Office of State Governmental Relations for international and immigration issues.

Earlier, Brown was Director of International & Intercultural Education in the Maricopa Community College District of Tempe, Arizona.
Brown received her doctorate in 1991 in Philosophy, Agricultural Education and Studies from Iowa State University, Ames; her master’s of science in education from UC Davis in 1987 and her teaching credentials in international political theory, international relations and vocational agriculture form UC Davis in 1986.
