The 32-page illustrated guide is designed for North Coast residents but is applicable throughout the state. Information on stocking food and supplies for seven days, the North Coast’s unique geological location and how to prepare your home for an earthquake can be found in the guide. For example, keeping a wrench wrapped in a waterproof container near a gas main can prevent a fire in the event of an earthquake. More tips like this are found in the guide’s Thirty Suggestions to Make Your Home Earthquake Safe.
The fair exhibit, sponsored by the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group, is open from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. in Hindley Hall in the fairgrounds’ Commercial Building. The exhibit features a tsunami theater, wave tank, and a “make your own earthquake in a pail” exhibit. Fairgoers can also register for ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake drill scheduled for Oct. 15.
In September Living On Shaky Ground will available through schools, businesses and agencies throughout the North Coast. The guide is the main publication for the northern California portion of the Earthquake Country Alliance’s Putting Down Roots project, which serves the entire state of California, Nevada, Utah and Alaska.
The guide is the work of Humboldt State University Geology Professor Lori Dengler, in conjunction with the Department of Geology, the California Earthquake Authority, the California Emergency Management Agency and the Earthquake Country Alliance.
