Varner, who teaches Wildland Fire Management and Ecology, is a fire and fuels scientist and Director of the one-of-a-kind Wildland Fire Laboratory on campus. Another Associate Editor with the journal nominated him for the editorship.
“They felt I was a shrewd editor and a valuable asset to the editorial board,” Varner says.
Forest Science is a bimonthly journal. It has published significant articles in areas of forest research, from photosynthesis to silviculture, for more than 45 years. Its international reputation for immediacy and impact has consistently placed it among the highest ranks of forestry journals.
“I think it can inspire a lot of confidence in the forestry students to know that one of their professors is an editor for one of the major journals in their field,” says Ken Fulgham, Department Chair of Forestry & Wildland Resources. “And it’s a sign, nationally, that the Humboldt State Forestry Program is healthy and vigorous.”
