For the final talk in this semester’s Climate and Clean Energy Series—“Scaling Our Energy Future: Insights from the Utility Sector”—PG&E Executive Vice President Carla J. Peterman will describe how the utility plans to scale the energy system to meet growing power demand, decarbonization, and resiliency goals, while ensuring that energy remains affordable.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E) is one of the nation’s largest electric and gas utilities—providing power to over 16 million people across a 70,000 square-mile service area that stretches from the Humboldt Bay Area down to Bakersfield, and from the Pacific Ocean to the Sierra Nevada.

Peterman is the Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Chief Sustainability Officer for PG&E, overseeing the company’s regulatory, legislative, sustainability, and charitable strategies. Peterman’s career has included multiple senior-level government and utility roles focused on California’s clean energy future—including commissioner positions at the California Energy Commission and the California Public Utilities Commission. She holds a PhD in Energy & Resources from the University of California, Berkeley, and MS and MBA degrees from Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar.

The Climate and Clean Energy Series is hosted by the Schatz Energy Research Center at Cal Poly Humboldt, and seeks to provide illuminating conversations about complex topics in renewable energy, energy access, and community resilience.
