Student Charged with Assaulting Fellow Student

Arcata – Arcata police have arrested an 18-year-old Humboldt State University resident student, Phillip Tripp, and a 15-year-old Happy Camp resident in connection with the alleged stabbing early Sunday morning, May 10, of a 23-year-old HSU student in the vicinity of 11th Street and J Street off-campus downtown.

Arcata officers booked Tripp into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and as an accessory to an assault. The juvenile was booked into Humboldt County Juvenile Hall.

The victim, believed to be a senior living off campus, was treated at the Mad River Hospital emergency room for multiple stab wounds and released.

Arcata police are investigating what up led to the assault, which was reported at approximately 2:15 a.m. They obtained a description of the vehicle in which the suspects reportedly fled and detained Tripp and the 15-year-old male at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday. The vehicle was found parked near Humboldt State residence halls.
