Student Government Campaigns Against Higher Ed Budget Cuts

Representatives from HSU's Associated Students will be collecting "bucks" from students on Monday, Feb. 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the U.C. Quad. But they're not looking for "bucks" bearing George Washington's image—instead the student government representatives are raising awareness of California's recent budget cuts to higher education.

The event is in conjunction with "The Bucks Start Here" campaign, a grassroots effort started by the California State Student Association (CSSA) intended to draw attention to the disinvestment of public higher education in California.

Students will have the chance to sign a $650 million bill with Governor Jerry Brown's portrait in the center. The goal is to collect thousands of these "bucks" for a March 5 event on the state capitol. Representatives from the Associated Students of all 23 California State University (CSU) campuses will lobby and let both the governor and elected representatives know how budget cuts are making higher education more and more difficult for students to obtain.

"It is time that our representatives at the capitol stop ignoring our plight. They will hear us, and know that we students are a powerful, united group. That they must fulfill their promises of affordable, quality higher education for California's next generations," says Jesse Hoskins, HSU's representative to the CSSA.

At the March 5 event in Sacramento, the CSSA will rally students across the state and join forces with the University of California Student Association (UCSA) and the Student Senate for California Community College (SSCCC), to advocate on behalf of investing in public higher education.

According to a media release, the CSSA is dedicated to maintaining and enhancing accessibility to quality education for the people of California at the California State University. The organization represents the 400,000-plus students of the CSU system.
