"It's important to create a forum for students to ask questions of the candidates and I can't think of a better host for such a forum than student media," said Christopher Hoff, managing editor of _The Lumberjack_.
This semester Humboldt State's student population reached a new high of 7,800. While many of these students are spread throughout the county, the majority reside within Arcata's city limits. With such a large presence in the community, HSU students represent a significant voting bloc come election season.
"Not only should students be involved in politics personally, I don't think they realize they have a say in the community of Arcata. They should be aware that the leaders of Arcata are considering them, so they should be a part of what lawmakers are doing," said KRFH-AM station manager Jeanne Selden.
"We'll be handing out 3-by-5 cards before hand for people to write their questions down. We'll also have members of KRFH and _The Lumberjack_ moderating the event to make sure things run smoothly," Selden said.
The candidates for city council are incumbent Michael Machi, Schatz Energy Research Center engineer Michael Winkler, firefighter and student Jason Grow, bike messenger Geronimo Garcia, Jacoby Creek Land Trust executive director Susan Ornelas and Northern Humboldt Unified High School District board member Shane Brinton.
