Arcata – Humboldt State University student investigative reporters are cited for excellence in the current issue of Quill, the magazine published by the Society of Professional Journalists that follows news industry developments.
The September issue credits “Nobody’s Fault,” a detailed investigative report published May 15 by the North Coast Journal, that uncovered the background of a Hoopa resident, James Lee Peters, who committed suicide in the Humboldt County Jail in August 2007.
The students overcame resistance from authorities and pieced together the run-up to Peters’s death by pouring over public records.
Quill commended the students for outstanding investigative work. They are Matthew Barry, Tatiana Cummings, Adrian Emery, Karina Gonzalez, Matthew Hawk, Chris Hoff, Cassandra Hoisington, Marc Kozachenko, Melinda Spencer, Meghannraye Sutton, Nicole Willens, and Deunn Willis.
