“I found out about schools I never found doing Google searches! I have even more options than I realized.”
These were just two of the comments shared from the 45 HSU students who made the trip to the 2007 California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education hosted by UC Davis. The trip was organized, staffed, and supported by the Educational Opportunity Program/Student Support Services, Learning Center, INRSEP, and the Office for Research, Graduate Studies and International Programs.
Since the early 1990’s the Forum has sponsored a biannual, all-day program designed to acquaint students from underrepresented groups with academic and career opportunities associated with advanced study in a wide rage of disciplines. The day includes key note speakers, workshops, panels and a Graduate School Fair. Representatives from over 150 leading graduate schools from across the nation were available to visit with students, including most of the CSU’s, UC’s, as well as Stanford, Harvard, etc. Funding is provided by the Forum to cover hotel and transportation for students who qualify.
Many of the recruiters voiced pleasant surprise at the number of students from HSU and the opportunity to visit with students who often get “trapped” behind the redwood curtain. Likewise, the students commented on the benefits of such an opportunity:
“I had a great time talking with so many different representatives from different schools and all the wonderful potential graduate students. I must confess to the intellectual pleasure of having such great conversations with such academically conscious people.”
“One of the recruiters is from my home town! He said he was really going to try and get me into the summer program his university offers!”
Next year’s Forum is scheduled for Nov 8 at UC Berkeley.
