Given the period of time the collection spans, the isolation of the Encampment community, and Nichols’ gender, this collection of images is unparalleled in its historical significance and visual storytelling. Photography enthusiasts and historians are encouraged to explore more of Nichols’ photographs and writings online through the American Heritage Center (Laramie, Wyoming) or visit the Grand Encampment Museum.
The exhibition “Lora Webb Nichols: Photographs Made, Photographs Collected, 1888-1935”, will run from February 15 through March 16 at the Reese Bullen Gallery. Hill will host a Curator Talk Wednesday, March 6, 5-6 p.m. in Art B room 102. The talk is free and open to the public.
The exhibit is the culmination of a project that began in 2012, when Hill came across hundreds of Nichols’ photographs during a residency in Wyoming. Enlisting the help of students, Hill worked to preserve and disseminate an archive of 24,000 images to ensure the safekeeping of the historically valuable images.
