Tsunami Boat Visits Humboldt County Fair

The Humboldt County Fair opens today and, for the 17th consecutive year, Humboldt State University is partnering with the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group to host the Earthquake Tsunami Room at the Humboldt County Fair.

Featured in this year’s exhibit is a 22-foot fiberglass boat that beached near Dry Lagoon in early June. The boat’s registration number traces it to Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture, one of the regions hardest hit in the March 2011 tsunami.

This year’s room also remembers the water disasters of fifty years ago: the tsunami that devastated Crescent City in March 1964 and the deadly Christmas Floods in December that caused at least $100 million damages in Humboldt County Alone.

There is plenty of information on preparing for the next earthquake, flood, tsunami or other disaster. Find out what you can do now to protect yourself and your loved ones before it strikes.

Know your zone – what areas are at risk of a tsunami and what areas are safe. Learn the stories of ordinary people who became tsunami heroes and heroines by having the knowledge to act quickly before the waves struck.

As usual, the room will have lots of great free educational materials – Living on Shaky Ground, a 32-page earthquake and tsunami preparedness magazine, beautiful California tsunami posters, community tsunami brochures and evacuation zone maps, and information for recreational and commercial boaters.

Also returning is our tsunami theater, tsunami wave tank, “make your own earthquake in a pail” liquefaction exhibit and knowledgeable staff who can answer your questions about earthquakes, tsunamis and how to prepare for them.

The Earthquake Tsunami Room is located in Hindley Hall, the commercial building, and is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. from August 14 to 24.

The earthquake room is supported by the Humboldt State University, the California Office of Emergency Services, the National Weather Service, the California Geological Survey and the members of the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group.
