Union Meets with CSU to Address Massive Budget Cuts

_The following is a news release from the CSU Chancellor’s Office._ The leaders of the California State University Employees Union – who represent more than 16,000 CSU employees – met Tuesday with members of the CSU’s management team to discuss options to deal with the proposed $583 million cut to the CSU’s budget for 2009-10. This represents a reduction of approximately 16 to 20 percent of state General Fund support to the system.

Chancellor Reed has directed negotiators to operate under the guiding principles of serving as many students as possible while maintaining quality, and to protect as many jobs as possible for employees. The CSUEU and the management team discussed ways to deal with the budget reductions including the possibility of furloughs as a potential alternative to layoffs. More information is provided here.
