Upcoming Polytechnic Open Forums

Humboldt State's Polytechnic Self-Study continues as steering and working groups have been formed to address a wide range of topics associated with the possible designation.

The formal self-study includes a detailed analysis of campus operations and activities associated with becoming a comprehensive polytechnic, which will be outlined in a final report submitted in September to the Chancellor’s Office for further consideration.

HSU is soliciting feedback in two of the first upcoming online forums focused on potential university name changes that include the word “polytechnic”. The University Name Working Group will engage students, faculty, staff, alumni, community members, and other stakeholders to contribute well-informed, sound recommendations. Naming considerations include:

• Reflection of the uniqueness of HSU and our approach to a comprehensive Cal Poly
• History and the meaning of HSU
• Our collective strategic vision for the future

Additional working groups have been formed to explore academic programs, the role of the Liberal Arts, business plans, facilities, external partnerships, inclusive student success, and more. Learn more on the HSU Polytechnic Self-Study website.

Leaders of each working group are planning additional opportunities for consultation and input. More information on ways to engage is forthcoming.

HSU announced in November that the California State University asked the University to undertake a self-study toward becoming designated a polytechnic. The request offers the momentous possibility of HSU becoming one of just three polytechnic universities in the state, and the only one in Northern California. It would better position HSU to meet specific workforce needs on the North Coast and statewide, and it would significantly raise HSU’s profile among prospective students and grant-funding organizations.
