During the half-day service event, as many as 90 YES staff members and volunteers will get to work, beautifying the community center.
"It is fitting to provide these services to Manila Community Center in anticipation of the 40th anniversary of Y.E.S. this coming fall," states Mary Stuart, Operations Manager of Y.E.S. "Manila was the site of the Tutorial Program, the original service project that in 1968 jump-started the tradition of Y.E.S. to serve unmet needs in the local community."
YES has been home to dozens of student-developed, student-run volunteer initiatives, during those 40 years.
Currently, YES runs 14 equally impressive student programs, tackling everything from educating local youth about the environment, visiting senior citizens, working with foster children, supporting local Spanish-speaking families, and leading recreation activities at juvenile hall all of which were dreamed up, pursued, and brought into action by students.
The volunteers hope thier service efforts on March 24 will bring in donations to help defray YES operating expenses and provide funding to train future volunteers and student directors.
