Each year, ideaFest transforms the Library into a vibrant tapestry of discovery.
Cal Poly Humboldt will come alive with innovation, creativity, and discovery during the 13th annual ideaFest on Friday, May 1, as hundreds of students, faculty, and staff showcase the projects they’re most proud of.

A signature campus tradition, ideaFest brings together disciplines from across the University to highlight hands-on learning through research, artistic expression, and community-engaged projects. From scientific inquiry and social research to film, music, and digital media, ideaFest celebrates the breadth of ideas shaping Humboldt and the world beyond.

“IdeaFest 2026 is a powerful reminder that learning is a transformative process, and our 13th annual showcase is your opportunity to be both inspired and inspiring,” says Library Dean Cyril Oberlander. “It’s a chance to celebrate the brilliance of our student community and witness the tremendous impact of their academic and creative journeys.”

Creative expression is woven throughout ideaFest, with live music, performances, and multimedia showcases highlighting the talents of University artists and performers. The afternoon begins with the lively sounds of the Marching Lumberjacks at the Library entrance, setting a celebratory tone before visitors step inside to explore. Guided Sculpture Walk tours invite guests to experience artwork installed throughout the building, while dance performances on the second floor and live music on the first floor fill the space with movement and sound.

Students across campus share their work in engaging ways. For example, the Art Gallery tours in the Reese Bullen Gallery highlight works by graduating seniors. Additionally, the Pelican Bay student presentations connect audiences with research and perspectives that extend beyond traditional classroom settings.

The Library Makerspace hosts a dynamic showcase of digital and hands-on projects, alongside conversations about multimodal storytelling in the age of AI, while nearby, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) Bridges Scholars deliver fast-paced lightning talks on regenerative medicine.

Interactive demonstrations in the new Hall of Simulation offer immersive, hands-on experiences, and the day continues with film screenings, math and data science presentations focused on “Data for Good,” and a Transfer Student Showcase highlighting academic journeys and research success. Together, these events capture the energy of ideaFest—a day where creativity, curiosity, and hands-on learning intersect in powerful and unexpected ways.

Sponsored by the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs, the Library, and Marketing & Communications in collaboration with the colleges, ideaFest continues to grow each year as one of Humboldt’s most dynamic academic showcases.

IdeaFest reflects the spirit of collaboration and curiosity. It’s a place where ideas are shared, questions are explored, and connections are made—across disciplines, communities, and ways of thinking.

“IdeaFest connects people and ideas, and it is where curiosity and creativity intersect in surprising ways. Please join this celebration of student achievement, where every student’s voice and vision are welcome, filling the space with a hum of creativity that shapes the campus and world,” Cyril says.
