With the cheers of thousands of family members and friends echoing throughout campus, Cal Poly Humboldt proudly celebrated the achievements of its Spring Class of 2025 during commencement ceremonies held Saturday.

A total of more than 1,300 students, aged 17 to 67, earned degrees and certificates this spring, each representing a unique journey that culminated in a day of pride and recognition. This year's commencement also celebrated a historic milestone: the graduation of the first student from Humboldt’s pioneering Cannabis Studies program, which was launched in 2023 as part of the University’s polytechnic expansion.

“Commencement is one of the most joyful moments of the year—seeing our students cross the stage surrounded by their loved ones is an unforgettable experience. It’s a celebration of hard work, strength, and the bright futures ahead,” says Advancement Events & Commencement Coordinator Shannon Collart.

Nearly 1,000 students participated in the commencement ceremony, showcasing the achievements of the university's three colleges. The College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences celebrated 237 graduates. Meanwhile, the College of Natural Resources & Sciences had 349 graduates. Lastly, the College of Professional Studies marked the occasion with 411 graduates.

Among the special guests was William “Bill” Tripp, the director of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy for the Karuk Tribe. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Sciences for his dedication to Indigenous-led environmental stewardship. Tripp is the first person in the university's history to receive this award.

Additionally, Distinguished Alum Dan Phillips (‘91, Business, Computer Information Systems), a Humboldt County native and tech industry leader, whose dedication as a philanthropist and mentor profoundly impacts Cal Poly Humboldt and North Coast students, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters.

The celebration continues Tuesday, May 20, with the Regional Commencement ceremony in Southern California, which allows students with families and supporters in the area to join the celebration closer to home. Forty-six graduates are expected to participate. The event is open to students from all majors who registered for either or both ceremonies.
