With selections from Mozart to Sondheim and Ellington, members of the HSU Music Department faculty will perform a musical welcome to the new school year on Saturday, September 10 in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

HSU Natural History Museum Hosts Arts! Arcata Event

The HSU Natural History Museum invites community members to visit for an evening of art, music, and natural history exploration for Arts! Arcata on Friday, Sept. 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. The evening will celebrate the work of two local artists inspired by nature, the acoustic music of For Folk’s Sake, and the museum’s new hands-on Redwood Ecology exhibit.

Personal Portraits, Stories Tell the Legacy of Holocaust Survivors

Multiply by Six Million: Portraits and Stories of Holocaust Survivors presents a visually arresting and powerful first-person history of one of the defining events of the 20th century through photographic portraits and personal stories of Holocaust survivors. Humboldt State University’s Reese Bullen Gallery presents Multiply by Six Million from September 2 to October 8, 2011 with an opening reception on Thursday, September 1 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Spring with Vivaldi and the Humboldt Symphony

Humboldt Symphony’s spring concert features two of Vivaldi’s “ The Four Seasons,” Mozart’s Overture to “The Magic Flute” and Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony—“some of the most popular classical pieces for orchestra ever written,” said Humboldt Symphony conductor and HSU Music professor Paul Cummings.

Students Prepare to Kick-Off 44th Annual Humboldt International Film Festival

The theme of “Revolution” will herald in the 44th annual Humboldt International Film Festival, taking place May 1-7. It is the world’s oldest student-run film festival, with independent and alternative short film submissions from the local community and around the world. All events are free to HSU students and $5 for non-students.

Madrigals Go Modern, MRT Stays Jazzy

In their annual spring concert the HSU Madrigal Singers mix the modern and the ancient, and the Mad River Transit Singers accent improvisations and variety with tunes from Duke Ellington and Stevie Wonder to Jimmy Van Heusen. Their voices share the Fulkerson Recital Hall stage on Sunday night, May 1.

“This is a special event for the guitar program at HSU,” said Music professor Nicholas Lambson. “We haven’t held a special concert like this in my five years here. All ticket sales go towards bringing guest guitar artists to Humboldt.”
