Arcata — Three days before the Jacks kick off their 2008 season, Humboldt State was picked No. 6 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Poll, released Wednesday.

Fire Quickly Contained in Music Building

Arcata — At about 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 29, Humboldt State University faculty members noticed smoke coming from a locked custodial closet in Old Music Building 8A, a single story structure. Faculty members pulled the fire alarm and evacuated the building. There were no injuries and the University Police Department determined that there was no broad threat to the campus as a whole.

HSU shines in food drive

Arcata— Nine hundred fifty pounds of food were collected for HSU's Holiday Food Drive as students, faculty and staff did their part to help Food For People, Humboldt County's only food bank. The food will go toward providing sustenance for the nearly 10,000 Humboldt County residents who need assistance.

ARCATA — Another pivotal roadtrip looms ahead for the Jacks, who head to Southern California on Thursday for two CCAA games. On Friday, Humboldt State faces Cal Poly Pomona, and on Saturday the Lumberjacks battle Cal State San Bernardino. Both games are scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.

ARCATA — The California Collegiate Athletic Association reaches the halfway point of its season for Humboldt State following this week’s road games. The Lumberjacks take on Cal Poly Pomona in the Broncos’ Kellogg Gym on Friday, then face Cal State San Bernardino in Coussoulis Arena on Saturday. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m.

Richmond Urges Internet Action

Arcata - The recommendations of the Governor’s Broadband Task Force to foster distance learning, Internet tutoring, off-campus educational partnerships and rural technology and jobs “are extremely important opportunities for the North Coast and its future,” Humboldt State University President Rollin Richmond said on the unveiling of the task force’s report January 17.

This Week’s Games: Following a road split, the Lumberjacks seek a home sweep this week when they face Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus in California Collegiate Athletic Association games. First up is Friday’s 5:30 p.m. game against the Chico State Wildcats, the top end of a doubleheader that finishes with the men’s game. On Saturday, Cal State Stanislaus goes up against the Jacks in another twinbill opener set for 5:30 p.m.

This Week’s Games: Familiar rivals Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus travel to Arcata this week for men’s basketball matchups with the Lumberjacks. On Friday, the Chico State Wildcats will visit for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff, and the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors will be in town for Saturday’s game at the same start time. Both games are the latter half of a doubleheader that begins with the women’s contests.

Arcata - The number of freshmen applications to Humboldt State University has risen dramatically again this year, as students throughout California show a growing interest in the campus.

HSU women look to extend recent success

ARCATA – After a two-game winning streak, the Lumberjacks continue California Collegiate Athletic Conference games with a weekend road-trip. They begin their weekend traveling to San Francisco to take on the San Francisco State Gators, then head south to Seaside to face the Cal State University Monterey Bay Otters. The Jacks kick off the back-to-back double headers, Friday and Saturday nights, with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.

Chamber Groups Play Rare Classics

Arcata - Redwood Coast musicians comprising a trio of chamber groups will perform rare works by Mozart, Beethoven and Bach and classic ragtime numbers on Sunday, January 20, at 8:00 p.m. in Humboldt State University’s Fulkerson Recital Hall.

Adult Learning Garners $100K

Arcata – The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Humboldt State University has received a $100,000 renewal grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation of San Francisco to continue low-cost education for Humboldt County adults more than 50 years old.

ARCATA — Humboldt State takes its 7-2 overall record and 2-0 league mark to Rohnert Park for a California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Sonoma State on Thursday. The Lumberjacks travel back to Arcata for Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. game against UC San Diego in the East Gym.

Environmentalist Named Top Prof

“Students should be explorers, not followers” That is the creed of one of Humboldt State University’s top environmentalists, Carolyn Ward, named Outstanding Professor of 2007/2008.

Nation’s Top Teacher at HSU

Arcata – Washington State’s Andrea Peterson, 2007 National Teacher of the Year, will speak at Humboldt State University and share her philosophy of cross-curricular education, in which math, reading and the fine arts are integrated to educate the whole person.

Internet Project Surveys Public Needs

Arcata – Redwood Coast Connect, the pilot program led by Humboldt State University for regional Internet access, is conducting a telephone survey this month of residents of Del Norte, Humboldt Mendocino, and Trinity Counties. Project officials encourage the public to take a few minutes to answer the needs survey at home or work.

Student Health Unit Reaccredited

Arcata - Humboldt State University’s Student Health and Counseling Center, which is putting the finishing touches to a $500,000 modernization, has received a fresh stamp of approval from the national organization that monitors the facility’s medical services.

Schatz Lab To Get New Home

The Humboldt State University Advancement Foundation’s Finance Committee approved the release of $2.1 million for the construction of a new laboratory facility for the Schatz Energy Research Center at its November 28 meeting. The money will be drawn from a fund created by the late Dr. Louis W. Schatz, who provided the original financial support for SERC’s establishment and left additional funds for SERC in his estate.
