Filled with historic and contemporary photographs, food specimens, memoirs, and recipes, baskets, and other artifacts, “Seaweed, Salmon, and Manzanita Cider: A California Indian Feast” is a new statewide traveling exhibition from the Grace Hudson Museum and Exhibit Envoy. Included in this exhibit are artifacts from Native Tribes in Humboldt County and throughout California. Humboldt State University in conjunction with the Art Department’s Museum and Gallery Practices Class invites the community to attend the opening reception on Thursday, April 17 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The “2014 Art Graduates Exhibition, on display in the Reese Bullen Gallery April 24 through May 17, showcases the work of current students receiving art degrees from HSU and concludes the gallery’s Humboldt State University Centennial Year Exhibition Series. A public reception and brief awards ceremony will take place Thursday, April 24 from 5-7 p.m. A closing reception will held be May 17 following the HSU College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Commencement Ceremony.

Humboldt State University’s First Street Gallery presents, Nightwatch, a collection of mixed media works and photographs by Seattle artist Ellen Garvens on display January 31 through March 2. Currently a professor of art at the University of Washington in Seattle, Garvens’ work has earned her national and international acclaim in solo and group exhibitions.

Fall 2013 was a big semester for Humboldt State: the university kicked-off its Centennial year with an unforgettable celebration on the Plaza; HSU students, faculty and staff made their mark both on- and off-campus and the university continued to expand its academic offerings with new programs and majors in a variety of disciplines. From student achievements to university milestones, here are some of the highlights of Fall 2013.

HSU University Singers capture the holiday spirit with Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols and the Humboldt Chorale sings a liturgical work in their shared concert on Sunday, December 15 at 8 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

HSU Jazz Orchestra blurs musical boundaries from country to Cuban pop, plus big band jazz classics on Saturday, December 14 at Fulkerson Recital Hall.

In its only concert this December, the Humboldt Symphony performs a holiday favorite, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite on Sunday December 15 at 3 p.m. in the Fulkerson Recital Hall.
