HSU Music Students Perform in Annual Honors Recital

A Bach partita, an Offenbach aria, a composition for marimba and John Cage sonatas are among the musical selections on the program for the 2014 HSU music student Honors Recital Friday, February 7 in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

Humboldt State University's First Street Gallery presents, The Universe Unfolded, an exhibition of art featuring a variety of mixed media works by Ananda Oliveri. The exhibition will run from January 31st through March 2, 2014.

Nightwatch: Works by Ellen Garvens

Humboldt State University’s First Street Gallery presents, Nightwatch, a collection of mixed media works and photographs by Seattle artist Ellen Garvens on display January 31 through March 2. Currently a professor of art at the University of Washington in Seattle, Garvens’ work has earned her national and international acclaim in solo and group exhibitions.

A Look Back at Fall 2013

Fall 2013 was a big semester for Humboldt State: the university kicked-off its Centennial year with an unforgettable celebration on the Plaza; HSU students, faculty and staff made their mark both on- and off-campus and the university continued to expand its academic offerings with new programs and majors in a variety of disciplines. From student achievements to university milestones, here are some of the highlights of Fall 2013.

Fall Art & Artisans Fair Features Student Artwork

Humboldt State University’s Reese Bullen Gallery presents its annual Fall Art and Artisans Fair in the Reese Bullen Gallery on Wednesday, December 11, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Thursday, December 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Double Play of Jazz at HSU

HSU turns a double play of jazz with ensemble concerts on Thursday, December 12 and Saturday, December 14 in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

Ceramic Invitational at First Street Gallery

Humboldt State University's First Street Gallery presents "A Ceramic Invitational Exhibition," featuring artwork by nine North Coast artists through December 23rd. The show is a fundraiser for the gallery, which features a broad selection of affordable, high quality ceramic pieces and paintings suitable for holiday gifts.

Glass, Color and Light: Paintings by Demetri Mitsanas

Humboldt State University's First Street Gallery presents "Glass, Color, and Light," a solo exhibition by painter and Art Professor Emeritus Demetri Mitsanas on display through December 23rd. The exhibition features mixed media paintings of colorful still lifes that depict colored glassware and explore the relationship between light, color, and the transparent nature of glass.

Oops! Can’t Miss Percussion and Calypso Concert at HSU

HSU Percussion Ensemble presents the North Coast premiere of “Oops,” the World Percussion Group pounds out exciting rhythms of the Brazilian Samba and the HSU Calypso Band does their Caribbean thing on Saturday, December 7 in the Van Duzer Theatre.

A Full Night of Jazz Combos

It’s a full night of small group classic jazz and originals as two different sets of HSU Jazz Combos perform in separate shows on Saturday November 16 at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. in the Fulkerson Recital Hall at HSU.

A Musical Century with the Humboldt Bay Brass Band

Many events celebrate the HSU centennial but few will have this authentic touch: a locally created tune from the era of the school’s founding, played on the actual instrument of one of its founders.

Exploring the Wonder in “Humboldt Unbound”

Who in the world was Alexander von Humboldt? During Humboldt State University’s centennial year, this original play about the school’s namesake attempts to capture the spirit of his life as visionary explorer, scientist, godfather of ecology and champion of diversity and freedom.

Artists from The Indigenous Arts Coalition present: “post contemporary”

The Indigenous Arts Coalition from the San Francisco Bay Area, an evolving group of culturally and artistically diverse artists identifying as indigenous, are featured at Humboldt State University’s Goudi’ni Gallery in _Artists from The Indigenous Arts Coalition present: “post contemporary,”_ November 8 through December 5. The exhibit opens with a reception for the artists from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 8. The public is invited to attend this free, public event.

A Fiery Start for the Humboldt Symphony

Humboldt Symphony performs the climactic movements of Stravinsky’s famous Firebird Suite and other selections in its first concert of the school year Nov. 2 in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

REVISIT: Art by Former Faculty at the Reese Bullen Gallery

The Reese Bullen Gallery celebrates Humboldt State University’s Centennial, with the final exhibit of a three-part art faculty exhibition series. _REVISIT: Art by Former Faculty_ highlights artwork from faculty that began teaching at HSU in the late 1960's through the early 1990's. The exhibit runs from November 1 through November 21, with an opening reception on Friday, November 1, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free event.

Jane Fonda to Narrate Films on California’s Environment

Academy-Award winner Jane Fonda has joined a California team of distinguished scientists, educators and media producers, including Humboldt State University specialists, to create inspirational stories about the state’s changing natural environment.

First Street Presents 'Forest Invisible: Photographs by Young Suh'

Humboldt State University First Street Gallery presents Forest Invisible, a solo exhibition by photographer Young Suh, on display from Friday, Oct. 4, through Sunday, Nov. 3. The exhibition will feature photographs that examine the tradition of landscape as a subject in art as well as our culture’s dissociative relationship to nature.
