HSU Student Honored for Eureka Chinatown Research

Graduating senior Yang Yang, a Geography and International Studies major at Humboldt State University, has won the $250 "Outstanding Student Paper" award from the Ethnic Geography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers.

Ayoob Named Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

Ken Ayoob has been named Dean of Humboldt State University’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Ayoob served as interim Dean of the college since 2007. Prior to his interim appointment, Ayoob served as associate Dean to the college in 2005 and chaired the HSU Music Department from 2000 to 2007.

Higher Ed Leaders Lay Out Consequences of Budget Cuts The three leaders of the state’s public higher education system rallied against the proposed cuts to their universities Tuesday saying the reductions will have long-lasting effects on California’s economy.

Downed Power Line Cuts Electricity to Campus

The Humboldt State University campus is currently experiencing a brief interruption to electrical power. The cause is believed to be associated with a downed power line in Arcata.

Annual Humboldt State Student Art Exhibit

Humboldt State University’s Reese Bullen Gallery presents the 2011 Annual Juried Student Exhibition. A wide variety of student-created artwork, including drawings, paintings, photography, jewelry, printmaking, graphic design, ceramics and sculpture will be on exhibit. A series of prizes and scholarships acknowledging the achievements and creativity of Humboldt State University’s art students will be presented at an awards ceremony on Thursday, April 14 at 5 p.m., followed immediately by an opening reception in the gallery until 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Embraceable Fang Zhang at HSU

Pianist Fang Zhang brings an international reputation and a unique program that includes European classics, American popular music and a Chinese piano work to HSU’s Fulkerson Recital Hall on Saturday, April 9. He also holds a free Master Class on April 8.

Whirler of the Dance: Guitarist Nicholas Lambson at HSU

Whether or not you can name the style, you know the music. Guitarist and HSU professor Nicholas Lambson performs a concert of contemporary music at Fulkerson Recital Hall on Friday, April 8, that mostly exemplifies the style called minimalism. “It’s probably the most accessible 20th century style,” Lambson said. With African and electronic music influences, “it’s familiar to audiences, partly because so much modern pop music is so similar.”

School of Business’s Symposium Looks to Boost Socially-Minded Entrepreneurs

Humboldt State University’s Institute for Entrepreneurship Education, part of the School of Business, is hosting a first-of-its-kind symposium titled “Changing the World One Entrepreneur at a Time.” The event takes place in the Great Hall, part of the new College Creek Apartments, located above the College Creek Marketplace, on Friday, April 8, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required, but an RSVP is requested.

Updated: U.S. Highway Reopened to Controlled Traffic

_The following was provided by Caltrans on Monday, April 4 at 11 a.m._ ROUTE 101 SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT UPDATE Eureka – Currently, Route 101 approximately 60 miles south of Eureka is open to one-way controlled traffic and motorists should expect 30-minute delays. Caltrans is pleased to announce that by Tuesday morning, April 5, the highway will open to one lane in each direction 24 hours a day. Motorists should anticipate minor traffic slowdowns.

Founders, Van Matre Halls; Buildings Reopened; Classes Resumed Following Monday Bomb Threat

Humboldt State University’s Founders and Van Matre Halls have reopened following a reported bomb threat in the area. Just before 10 a.m. on Monday University Police Department personnel discovered a note in the HSU Library about a potential bomb threat in the Founders Hall area of campus. University Police immediately evacuated the area and began a full investigation into the threat.

“Venetians and Dragons” with the Humboldt Bay Brass Band

“Venetians and Dragons,” the Humboldt Bay Brass Band (HBBB) concert on April 2 in Fulkerson Recital Hall, features music ranging from some of the oldest known works for brass to the premiere of an original composition combining elements of classical and jazz by HSU professor and HBBB director Dr. Gilbert Cline. And of course, dragons.

"The Help" Named HSU/CR Book of the Year

Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods have chosen “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett as their Book of the Year for 2011/12. The Help” is Kathryn Stockett’s first novel. Born and raised in Jackson, Miss., the author draws on her experiences growing up as a young woman in a society where sex, race and class all determined, to a large extent, who you were and what you might aspire to become.

CSU Addresses $500M Funding Cut

_The following was provided by the CSU Chancellor's Office_ The CSU’s Board of Trustees Tuesday discussed several strategies aimed at mitigating the governor's proposed $500 million cut to the university’s 2011-12 budget. The CSU will actually need to address a $550 million total gap in funding once $50 million in mandatory costs, including increased energy costs and employee health premiums, have been factored in.
