Humboldt State University’s Department of Religious Studies, teamed with the Center for Indian Community Development (CICD) and faculty from multiple disciplines, will host a three-day Hiroshima and genocide awareness forum November 12-14, based on a new book about the first atomic bombing by Father Eric Freed, director of HSU’s Newman Center and a lecturer in the department.

HSU Music Department colleagues, North Coast friends and former students combine to honor Deborah Clasquin, the much-beloved pianist and teacher who passed away last March, with a concert to benefit the newly established Deborah Clasquin Memorial Scholarship Fund, on Saturday, Sept. 26 in the Fulkerson Recital Hall on the HSU campus.

In its largest delegation to date, the Model United Nations program at Humboldt State University’s Department of Politics sent 31 students to San Francisco for the 2009 five-day intercollegiate simulation of the U.N., where they garnered five Meritorious Delegation Awards. Arcata - Humboldt State University President Rollin Richmond has approved the Academic Senate's recommendation of sociologist Jennifer Eichstedt as Outstanding Professor for the 2008-2009 academic year.

William Shubert, a Geography major at Humboldt State, was recently awarded an internship with National Geographic in Washington D.C. The internship will begin in the fall of 2009.

Assistant Professors Mark Baker and Noah Zerbe, both recognized experts in their fields, were each sought out to present their research at international academic symposiums over the past month.

Nine HSU Students, along with Geography Professor Tony Rossi, are currently on a six week trip across Tibet as part of the GEOG 411 Senior Field Research course.

Arcata – Humboldt State University student investigative reporters are cited for excellence in the current issue of Quill, the magazine published by the Society of Professional Journalists that follows news industry developments.

Humboldt State students in the Model United Nations program won four Meritorious Delegation Awards and finished among the top three performers for the second year running at the recent Model United Nations of the Far West Conference in San Francisco. The awards recognize outstanding academic preparation for, and participation in, the conference. HSU International Studies major Jonathan Linton was named Rappateur, or best delegate, in the economic and financial committee.

Assistant Professor Rae Robison and several Humboldt State University students were honored for their achievements at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival held at California State University at Los Angeles.

HSU alum Deborah O'Banks ('05/'06), a Special Education teacher and Hearst Scholar at Trillium Community Charter School in Arcata, imbues her students with confidence.

An apostle of the work ethic, Ms. O’Banks is a single mother of four, a committed service giver, youth group leader, Horse 4-H teacher, church volunteer, house builder, chainsaw wielder and motorcycle mechanic.
