Humboldt State University's Outstanding Students of 2018-2019 were honored at an awards ceremony May 1. Congratulations to all the winners!

More than 400 students will present research, performances and more at this year’s ideaFest, on Friday, May 3, from 12-5 p.m. in the HSU Library.

An HSU student took home a second place award at the 33rd Annual California State University Student Research Competition at CSU Fullerton.

Since 1964, Humboldt State has honored outstanding faculty. John O. Reiss, Department of Biological Sciences, Susan E. Marshall, Department of Forestry & Wildland Resources, Nicole Jean Hill, Department of Art, and Justus D. Ortega, Department of Kinesiology & Recreation Administration, are the recipients of the 2018-19 Distinguished Faculty Awards.

For the 19th consecutive year, HSU Environmental Resources Engineering students participated in the annual 2019 Mathematical Modeling Contest (MCM).

Fun fact: Humboldt State has an alma mater, and it was written in 1943 by an alumna named Joyce Bruner (‘45, Music Education). HSU’s “official” song, the alma mater is a piece of University music tradition that generations of students have heard, though probably without realizing what they were listening to in the first place.

HSU will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Indian Tribal and Educational Personnel Program in the Kate Buchanan Room on Friday, April 5 from 6-9 p.m.

On April 11 and 12, the Humboldt Bay Symposium will be held at the Wharfinger Building in Eureka. This year’s symposium, “Rising to Meet the Challenges of Climate Change,” will feature sessions on sea-level rise, ecological restoration, ocean science, and proposed and ongoing economic development in and around Humboldt Bay.

The community is invited to the 12th Annual California Big Time and Social Gathering, celebrating diverse California tribal cultures, on Saturday, April 6 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. in HSU's West Gym.

A two part exhibition, Ikyav, Píkyav: Making, Re-Making, will run from April 4 through May 18 at the Goudi’ni Gallery. An opening reception will take place April 4 from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

CHECK IT, HSU’s student-led violence prevention program, celebrated its fifth year recently.

HSU will conduct a campus-wide test of its Emergency Alert Systems on Wednesday, March 27 at 10 a.m.

Peace Corps announced today that Humboldt State University ranked No. 8 among medium schools on the agency’s list of top volunteer-producing colleges and universities in 2019. There are 30 alumnae currently volunteering in countries around the world.

Dan Phillips, whose life has taken him from Bridgeville School to the leadership team at streaming service Hulu, returns home to Humboldt to talk about his experiences at a special event on Thursday, April 4.

El Leñador, the student-run bilingual newspaper at Humboldt State University, won first place in six categories in the 2019 California College Media Association statewide awards competition. The awards were presented on March 2 in La Jolla. The newspaper also placed in an additional six categories.

What if there was a way that educators could detect students at risk of failing before compounding low scores make a come-back unlikely?

Donning bright green jackets and police radios, a group of HSU students reported for a new duty this week, helping the campus community stay safe. They’re part of the University Police Department’s safety escort program and are available to accompany students, staff, and faculty from one campus location to another at night.

The goal seemed simple: Power down. How? In the most complicated way imaginable. That was the assignment for Engineering 215 students, who built crazy contraptions as part of the annual Rube Goldberg challenge.
