Who says engineering can't be fun? Students in Lonny Grafman's Engineering 215 let their creative juices flow as part of the annual Rube Goldberg design project.

Humboldt State professors in collaboration with colleagues from College of the Redwoods are highlighting Latin America's African heritage with the 17th annual International Latino Film Festival, scheduled for 3-5 p.m., March 3, at Arcata’s Minor Theatre. Events take place each night from 6 to 10:20 p.m., and feature a film screening in Spanish with English subtitles followed by a discussion in English. The event is open to the public and admission is $5 per film. The festival is free to students enrolled in SPAN/ HIST/ ES 396 and SPAN 99A courses.

With a knack for mixing the heart breaking with the hilarious, award-winning author Sherman Alexie will deliver a lecture and question-and-answer session at the Van Duzer Theatre, on Thursday, March 5 at 7 p.m. The event is open to the public and tickets are available at HSU’s Ticket Office by dialing 707-826- 3928.

HSU’s Reese Bullen Gallery presents Vantage Points, an exhibition featuring three artists—local artist Shannon Sullivan, and Bay Area artists Kara Nelson and Joshua Martinez—who critically explore the way we look at landscapes and the natural world. The exhibit opens Friday, Feb. 13, at 5 p.m. with a free panel discussion by the artists and reception and runs through March 7.

Following heavy rains, a landslide has developed on the HSU campus behind the Housing Grounds Shop on Granite Ave. There is no immediate threat to safety. Housing and Facilities Management continue to monitor the slide with University Police providing traffic control and maintaining a safe perimeter. People are asked to avoid the area along Granite Ave. if possible.

_Humboldt State University President Lisa A. Rossbacher visited briefly this afternoon, Friday, Jan. 23, with students who are conducting a sit-in in the Native American Forum on campus. She delivered a letter and made the following remarks:_

Finding child care is hard. Finding quality, not to mention affordable, child care is even harder.

Electricity use accounts for nearly one quarter of the greenhouse gas emissions generated at Humboldt State, while transportation emissions from business travel, commuting, and solid waste disposal are responsible for over one third of the total. Those are two of the key findings from a comprehensive inventory of HSU’s greenhouse gas emissions, recently prepared by HSU’s Office of Sustainability.
