Blue Green Algae Detected in Local Waters

_The following was provided by the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services:_ Officials from the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) report that toxins associated with blue-green algae have been detected in the Trinity River. Health advisory signs are being posted, and confirmation testing is currently under way.

HSU Hosts Summer Program for Chinese Students

Humboldt State University’s Center for International Programs is hosting an Intensive English Language summer program for more than 20 students from China through July 29. The 3-week long partnership with the Jiangxi Institute of International Education through Nanchang University provides linguistic and cultural immersion and community service activities to students from China’s Jiangxi province. The Center for International Programs is also currently hosting three other intensive English programs.

News on the 2014-15 State Budget

_The following message was provided by the CSU Chancellor's Office._ The governor has signed the 2014-15 state budget that includes an increase of $142.2 million in base funding for the CSU. The budget increase will enable the CSU to maintain existing programs and services. Moreover, tuition fees will remain stable for our students for the fourth consecutive year. The allocation will also enable us to begin to address a backlog of deferred maintenance projects.

Joan Gold: A Joyful Eighty at HSU First Street Gallery

Humboldt State University’s First Street Gallery presents, _A Joyful Eighty_, a large collection of new paintings by artist Joan Gold, which will be on display July 5 through September 7. Gold’s exhibit will occupy both rooms at the gallery, affording visitors a comprehensive experience of the artist’s work at this stage in her eightieth year.

Geologists, Students Dig Out Evidence of Past Tsunamis in California

Two Humboldt State geologists and a team of graduate students contributed to the discovery of an extensive sedimentary deposit formed by a 1946 tsunami, providing the first known tangible evidence of the event and furthering the understanding of the long-term hazard of tsunamis on California coastal communities.

HSU Celebrates 'New Century' Class in Three Commencement Ceremonies

Humboldt State’s ‘New Century’ Class received their diplomas in three ceremonies in Redwood Bowl, on the HSU Campus. More than 1,500 graduates and their families packed the arena, as President Rollin Richmond, who will be retiring at the conclusion of the 2013/14 Academic Year, delivered commencement addresses to all three colleges.
