Humboldt State University’s charitable foundation has adopted an expansive new policy to strictly limit its holdings in a variety of industries, including companies directly or indirectly involved in fossil fuels. And through its “Humboldt Investment Pledge” is urging other foundations to do more to clean up their investments.

Humboldt State’s Schatz Energy Research Center has been awarded a pair of grants totaling more than $2 million from the World Bank Group to support its continued involvement in the Lighting Global initiative. Lighting Global and its sister programs, Lighting Africa and Lighting Asia, support the development of commercial markets for solar charged off-grid lighting products that are affordable to low income people in developing countries.

Humboldt State University is making a special effort to raise funds for two new memorial scholarships this week until the end of Founders Day on Friday, April 25. The scholarships are named for the admissions counselor and two alumni who perished in the April 10 bus accident, and will support low-income and first-generation college students.

Investigative journalists Alyson Martin and Nushin Rashidian will discuss their book, A New Leaf – The End of Cannabis Prohibition, in a presentation on Monday, April 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 in the Behavioral and Social Sciences building, room 162. The event is the latest installment of the Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research’s speaker series. It is free and open to the public.

Hundreds gathered on the UC Quad Thursday for a remembrance event in the early afternoon, and later for a candlelight vigil. The gatherings marked one week since the I-5 bus accident in which 10 perished and more than 30 were injured.

During the Spring 2014 semester the Religious Studies Department at Humboldt State University is celebrating the life and career of Fr. Eric Freed with a series of three lectures. Each of these lectures is devoted to a topic of importance to Fr. Freed. The third and final of these lectures will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, 7pm, in the Native American Forum on the HSU campus.

Filled with historic and contemporary photographs, food specimens, memoirs, and recipes, baskets, and other artifacts, “Seaweed, Salmon, and Manzanita Cider: A California Indian Feast” is a new statewide traveling exhibition from the Grace Hudson Museum and Exhibit Envoy. Included in this exhibit are artifacts from Native Tribes in Humboldt County and throughout California. Humboldt State University in conjunction with the Art Department’s Museum and Gallery Practices Class invites the community to attend the opening reception on Thursday, April 17 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The “2014 Art Graduates Exhibition, on display in the Reese Bullen Gallery April 24 through May 17, showcases the work of current students receiving art degrees from HSU and concludes the gallery’s Humboldt State University Centennial Year Exhibition Series. A public reception and brief awards ceremony will take place Thursday, April 24 from 5-7 p.m. A closing reception will held be May 17 following the HSU College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Commencement Ceremony.

E-Waste is the name given to computers, televisions, stereos, copiers, cell phones and other electronics nearing the end of their “lifecycles.” Many of these products can be reused, refurbished, or recycled. Unfortunately, discarded electronics is one of the fastest growing segments of our nation’s waste stream.

With 16 executive and council positions available, the Associated Students’ online election runs Tuesday to Thursday, April 22 to 24. This year’s election introduces a new voting system and asks students to weigh in on a proposed increase to the Associated Students Fee.
