Public radio listeners throughout Humboldt County have gained another programming option, thanks to expanded service provided by KHSU.

Humboldt State has opened two gender-neutral bathrooms and a gender-neutral locker room on campus to meet the needs of transgender and gender non-conforming students, faculty and staff.

Psychology Department students and faculty recently presented 24 posters, papers and an invited workshop at the Annual Western Psychological Association conference in Portland, Ore. April 24-27. The WPA meeting is the nation’s largest regional psychology conference with over 2,000 attendees this year. A total of 62 psychology students from HSU attended.

Humboldt State University’s charitable foundation has adopted an expansive new policy to strictly limit its holdings in a variety of industries, including companies directly or indirectly involved in fossil fuels. And through its “Humboldt Investment Pledge” is urging other foundations to do more to clean up their investments.

Humboldt State’s Schatz Energy Research Center has been awarded a pair of grants totaling more than $2 million from the World Bank Group to support its continued involvement in the Lighting Global initiative. Lighting Global and its sister programs, Lighting Africa and Lighting Asia, support the development of commercial markets for solar charged off-grid lighting products that are affordable to low income people in developing countries.

Humboldt State University is making a special effort to raise funds for two new memorial scholarships this week until the end of Founders Day on Friday, April 25. The scholarships are named for the admissions counselor and two alumni who perished in the April 10 bus accident, and will support low-income and first-generation college students.

The Humboldt State Calypso Band has been around for 28 years, but has never performed a full-length piece composed by one of its own members. At least not until Saturday May 3 at the Van Duzer Theatre.

Investigative journalists Alyson Martin and Nushin Rashidian will discuss their book, A New Leaf – The End of Cannabis Prohibition, in a presentation on Monday, April 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 in the Behavioral and Social Sciences building, room 162. The event is the latest installment of the Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research’s speaker series. It is free and open to the public.

Hundreds gathered on the UC Quad Thursday for a remembrance event in the early afternoon, and later for a candlelight vigil. The gatherings marked one week since the I-5 bus accident in which 10 perished and more than 30 were injured.

During the Spring 2014 semester the Religious Studies Department at Humboldt State University is celebrating the life and career of Fr. Eric Freed with a series of three lectures. Each of these lectures is devoted to a topic of importance to Fr. Freed. The third and final of these lectures will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, 7pm, in the Native American Forum on the HSU campus.

Humboldt State University President Rollin Richmond and the University Senate have selected Eugene Novotney, Jeffrey Black, Justus Ortega, Maral Attallah and Ken Fulgham as the Distinguished Faculty award recipients for 2013-14.

Confronted by Puritan disapproval and royal lust, they pioneered a new profession as the first women actors ever to appear on the English stage. Their story is told in “Playhouse Creatures,” performed for two weekends at HSU beginning April 24.
