Humboldt County’s radio dial is about to get a bit more crowded. Thanks to recent FCC approval of campus radio station KRFH’s application for a low-power FM license, the student-run radio station will soon be broadcasting over the air to a radio near you.

Humboldt State University’s First Street Gallery presents, Nightwatch, a collection of mixed media works and photographs by Seattle artist Ellen Garvens on display January 31 through March 2. Currently a professor of art at the University of Washington in Seattle, Garvens’ work has earned her national and international acclaim in solo and group exhibitions.

Ten staff members received Staff Recognition Awards during Wednesday’s Spring Welcome, an honor reflecting superior service to Humboldt State University. Nominated for consistent dedication to his or her job, efforts to enhance campus image, problem solving and handling of tough job assignments, those chosen receive a cash award generated through private funds contributed by alumni and other friends of the university.

Humboldt State has successfully kicked off its participation in the 2014 RecycleMania tournament, the national competition in which college campuses compete over eight weeks to see who can reduce, reuse and recycle the most on-campus waste.

Humboldt State University will soon offer a full General Education program online, making it the first campus in the California State University system to offer a complete package of online GE courses.

Prospective students submitted more than 760,000 undergraduate applications to California State University campuses for admission in fall 2014—the largest number of applications ever received by the 23-campus system and an increase of two percent over the previous year. The number of unique students submitting applications approached 284,000—an increase of nearly ten percent from two years ago. Five campuses—Fullerton, Long Beach, Northridge, San Diego, and San Luis Obispo—each received in excess of 50,000 applications for admission.

Humboldt State University’s Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research (HIIMR) will start its spring semester speaker series Feb. 4 with a presentation on urban baby boomer attitudes and consumption patterns regarding cannabis.

He was also involved with the Newman Center, which serves many HSU students.

In the midst of finals week, Humboldt State students got a rare treat: a visit from Milo and Tuula, two Golden Retriever pups specially trained to help students unwind.

Humboldt State’s College of eLearning and Extended Education is offering two new online degree programs in 2014: a Master of Arts in Applied Anthropology and a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with an option in Leadership Studies. Both programs are now accepting applications.

The California Ocean Science Trust has awarded ten grants totaling $4 million to state and local agencies to conduct marine research on the North Coast, including over $2.2 million to Humboldt State University.

HSU University Singers capture the holiday spirit with Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols and the Humboldt Chorale sings a liturgical work in their shared concert on Sunday, December 15 at 8 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

HSU Jazz Orchestra blurs musical boundaries from country to Cuban pop, plus big band jazz classics on Saturday, December 14 at Fulkerson Recital Hall.

In its only concert this December, the Humboldt Symphony performs a holiday favorite, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite on Sunday December 15 at 3 p.m. in the Fulkerson Recital Hall.

Humboldt State University Student Health Center (SHC) and Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) Departments have achieved accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). Accreditation distinguishes these departments from many other outpatient facilities by providing the highest quality of care to its patients as determined by an independent, external process of evaluation.

Recently, a team of HSU researchers used a unique combination of citizen science and genetic sampling to estimate the number of river otters around Humboldt Bay.
