A guest conductor for a wind band masterwork highlights the HSU Symphonic Band concert on Friday, December 6 in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

In many parts of the world, access to clean, safe drinking water is a luxury. But Jairo Luque Villanueva (’15, Environmental Resource Engineering) doesn’t believe it has to be that way.

The state’s new streamlined transfer program developed by California Community Colleges and California State University now offers 1,000 associate degrees for transfer in a wide variety of disciplines, making it easier for students to transfer to CSU and earn a bachelor’s degree.

As part of the Centennial Speaker Series, Naomi Klein delivers a talk in the Van Duzer Theatre on Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. The cost is $25 for adults and children, and $5 for HSU students.

Jeffrey Raber, Ph.D., presents “Medical Cannabis Quality Control in California: Keeping a Weed Free Garden,” as part of the second annual speaker series presented by the Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research. The talk takes place Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Native Forum (Behavioral & Social Sciences Building, Room 162).

Hundreds of sustainability leaders from around the state converged in Arcata Nov. 9-10 for the fall 2013 California Student Sustainability Coalition Convergence, hosted by Humboldt State. The theme of this year’s biannual conference was “Building Sustainable Communities.”

The history of military veterans on campus stretches back almost as far as Humboldt State’s own history. The first veterans appeared on campus following World War I and their impact was immediately felt with booming enrollment.

Humboldt State has been named a top school for Fulbright scholars by the Chronicle of Higher Education. Three HSU faculty members received awards in 2013-14, making Humboldt State a leading producer of Fulbright scholars among U.S. master’s institutions.

On Nov. 2, Humboldt State University Police partnered with agents from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and conducted a “minor decoy” sting operation within the city of Arcata. A minor with valid state identification attempted to purchase alcohol at multiple local businesses.

For the first time next week, HSU will take its annual career fair online.

Humboldt State University will celebrate international education and exchange Nov. 18-22 during International Education Week. Now in its 12th year at HSU, the annual event includes an international fashion show, lectures, a keynote speaker and panels on studying, living and working abroad. The event is free and open to the public.

On October 28, the CSU Board of Trustees Search Committee held an open forum where students, faculty, staff and community members provided input into the desired characteristics and experiences they seek in the next President.

HSU students Derrick Hicks (’13, Business) and Graeme Lock (’17) won the FLW College Fishing Western Conference Invitational on Clear Lake Oct. 12, qualifying them for the 2014 national championship.

Many events celebrate the HSU centennial but few will have this authentic touch: a locally created tune from the era of the school’s founding, played on the actual instrument of one of its founders.
