Campus Composting Ramps Up with Earth Tub

If you buy a sandwich at Humboldt State, it’s likely to come with locally-sourced produce, maybe a roll from a local bakery, and tofu made right here in Arcata. But what happens when that sandwich is just a crust and some mustard stains? With the recent installation of a large-scale composter known as the Earth Tub, the beginnings and ends of that sandwich can now be managed locally, too.

Geography Department Celebrates First-Generation Students, Gradutes, Faculty and Staff

Approximately half of Humboldt State students are the first in their family to attend a college or university. HSU Geography faculty Stephen and Mary Beth Cunha, having witnessed a generation of HSU students pass through the halls, developed a series of posters to highlight and celebrate first-generation students, graduates, staff and faculty in the Geography department.

Double Play of Jazz at HSU

HSU turns a double play of jazz with ensemble concerts on Thursday, December 12 and Saturday, December 14 in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

Ceramic Invitational at First Street Gallery

Humboldt State University's First Street Gallery presents "A Ceramic Invitational Exhibition," featuring artwork by nine North Coast artists through December 23rd. The show is a fundraiser for the gallery, which features a broad selection of affordable, high quality ceramic pieces and paintings suitable for holiday gifts.

Glass, Color and Light: Paintings by Demetri Mitsanas

Humboldt State University's First Street Gallery presents "Glass, Color, and Light," a solo exhibition by painter and Art Professor Emeritus Demetri Mitsanas on display through December 23rd. The exhibition features mixed media paintings of colorful still lifes that depict colored glassware and explore the relationship between light, color, and the transparent nature of glass.

Oops! Can’t Miss Percussion and Calypso Concert at HSU

HSU Percussion Ensemble presents the North Coast premiere of “Oops,” the World Percussion Group pounds out exciting rhythms of the Brazilian Samba and the HSU Calypso Band does their Caribbean thing on Saturday, December 7 in the Van Duzer Theatre.

CSU and Community College Transfer Program Hits Milestone

The state’s new streamlined transfer program developed by California Community Colleges and California State University now offers 1,000 associate degrees for transfer in a wide variety of disciplines, making it easier for students to transfer to CSU and earn a bachelor’s degree.

HSU Cycling Wins Conference Championship

HSU Cycling became the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference Mountain Bike champion Nov. 17, beating all Division I and II teams in the overall standings.

Chemical Analysis of Marijuana Examined in Speaker Series’ Second Installment

Jeffrey Raber, Ph.D., presents “Medical Cannabis Quality Control in California: Keeping a Weed Free Garden,” as part of the second annual speaker series presented by the Humboldt Institute for Interdisciplinary Marijuana Research. The talk takes place Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Native Forum (Behavioral & Social Sciences Building, Room 162).

Humboldt State Veterans’ Support Reaches Back Decades

The history of military veterans on campus stretches back almost as far as Humboldt State’s own history. The first veterans appeared on campus following World War I and their impact was immediately felt with booming enrollment.

HSU Named Top School for Fulbright Scholars

Humboldt State has been named a top school for Fulbright scholars by the Chronicle of Higher Education. Three HSU faculty members received awards in 2013-14, making Humboldt State a leading producer of Fulbright scholars among U.S. master’s institutions.
