In order to extend and enrich campus conversations about student success, the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching – in collaboration with the Faculty Development Office and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion – is offering faculty and staff book circles.

Humboldt State University lecturer and alum (’88, ’92) Jeffrey Dunk will deliver a free public lecture on conservation and learning on Thursday, January 27, at 5 p.m. in Van Duzer Theatre. An informal reception in the theatre lobby will follow.

Online courses offered this coming fall semester will pave the way for the future launch of HSU’s first fully online degree program: the Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work (BSW). In addition to creating greater access for undergraduate students, the online bachelor’s degree will tentatively be joined by an online Master of Arts in Social Work (MSW) in spring 2012.

Undergraduates at Humboldt State have more experience than most when it comes to studying in the forest, but this summer 22 students will take that experience to a whole new level.

There is an old pirate legend about a forgotten place on the Trinity River named Sailor’s Bar. The place has all but disappeared in the riverside undergrowth, but historical memory of the saga has been newly revived—and revised—by a Humboldt State University undergraduate.

Five new parking permit dispensers have been installed in several parking lots across Humboldt State University’s campus as of Tuesday, Jan. 18, the first day of the spring semester. In addition to increasing the number of dispensers from four to five on campus, the new units accept debit and credit cards and coins.

Governor’s Budget Proposal Includes Deep Cuts for the CSU The California State University will receive a $500 million—or 18 percent—reduction in state support in the 2011-12 budget proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown today. Dealing with an estimated $26 billion budget deficit, Brown said, “The cuts will be painful, requiring sacrifice from every sector of the state.”

Humboldt State University has named Dr. Peg Blake its new Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs. Today marks her first official day on campus.

Humboldt State University has been awarded three state and federal grants totaling $74,000 to finance academically-related service learning in the North Coast community. Service learning integrates classroom study with hands-on community service projects.

A collaborative effort of Humboldt State and NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service has begun to bridge a major historical gap in monitoring the northern section of the California Coastal System.

Fifth-graders at Morris Elementary School in McKinleyville will make a field trip Tuesday morning, Dec. 7, to meet with their semester-long pen pals: aspiring elementary school teachers at Humboldt State University who will give hands-on math presentations to their young protégés.

Humboldt State University’s JackPass Program, which allows students unlimited free rides on all Humboldt County buses, celebrated its 1 millionth rider on Thursday with the arrival of the 2:24 p.m. Arcata & Mad River Transit’s Red Route.

Humboldt State University will conduct a 15-minute test of its expanded emergency alert communications system on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 10:45 a.m., including a new network that combines an audible alert, voice-warning and strobe lights. The additional network is designed to ensure that the maximum number of people on campus would be notified in the event of an actual emergency.

Whether it’s a busted space heater or an old cell phone, most people have electronic waste – or e-waste – taking up space in their homes. What most people may not know is that recycling e-waste properly can have a positive impact on social and environmental conditions throughout the world.

Humboldt State University’s Logging Sports team captured first and second overall in the annual California Conclave competition in November, hosted by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and held at the Cal Poly Swanton Pacific Ranch just north of Santa Cruz. A contingent of 24 HSU students participated and many of them placed first in individual events. They competed with teams from Cal Poly, UC Berkley, Modesto Junior College and Central Oregon Community College. HSU senior Jess Engle captured the Belle of the Woods award for the overall best female competitor.

He is described as America’s best-loved, most popular and best-selling poet. Born 800 years ago in Persia, the poet and mystic called Rumi is a contemporary global phenomenon. Now his work has inspired North Coast actors and musicians to create “An Evening with Rumi,” presented by the HSU Department of Theatre, Film and Dance for two weekends, beginning December 2.
