Department Gains $50,000 for Native American Recruitment

Humboldt State University’s Department of Social Work has received a $50,000 contract from the California Social Work Education Center to administer the American Indian Recruitment (AIR) Program for all of Northern California.

Campus Honors Outstanding Students of the Year

David Janssen, Du Cheng and Ian O’Brien are this year’s Outstanding Students. All three were recognized for their admirable dedication to their studies, as well as to extra-curricular activities to benefit their peers.

Students Prepare to Kick-Off 44th Annual Humboldt International Film Festival

The theme of “Revolution” will herald in the 44th annual Humboldt International Film Festival, taking place May 1-7. It is the world’s oldest student-run film festival, with independent and alternative short film submissions from the local community and around the world. All events are free to HSU students and $5 for non-students.

Cycling Team Repeats Championship Performance

The HSU Cycling Club won the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference Div. II Road Racing Championships for yet another season. In addition, two of its riders won the individual overall championship.

Native American Arts Gallery Hosts Visual and Performing Artists

Schatz Center Makes Its First Foray into Middle East

HSU Named a Princeton Review "Green College"

The well-known education services company selected HSU for inclusion in the just-released second annual edition of its free downloadable book, “The Princeton Review’s Guide to 311 Green Colleges: 2011 Edition." This is the second year that HSU has been recognized for its commitment to sustainability.

Graduating senior Yang Yang, a Geography and International Studies major at Humboldt State University, has won the $250 "Outstanding Student Paper" award from the Ethnic Geography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers.

Ayoob Named Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences

Ken Ayoob has been named Dean of Humboldt State University’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Ayoob served as interim Dean of the college since 2007. Prior to his interim appointment, Ayoob served as associate Dean to the college in 2005 and chaired the HSU Music Department from 2000 to 2007.

Higher Ed Leaders Lay Out Consequences of Budget Cuts The three leaders of the state’s public higher education system rallied against the proposed cuts to their universities Tuesday saying the reductions will have long-lasting effects on California’s economy.

Downed Power Line Cuts Electricity to Campus

The Humboldt State University campus is currently experiencing a brief interruption to electrical power. The cause is believed to be associated with a downed power line in Arcata.

School of Business’s Symposium Looks to Boost Socially-Minded Entrepreneurs

Humboldt State University’s Institute for Entrepreneurship Education, part of the School of Business, is hosting a first-of-its-kind symposium titled “Changing the World One Entrepreneur at a Time.” The event takes place in the Great Hall, part of the new College Creek Apartments, located above the College Creek Marketplace, on Friday, April 8, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is not required, but an RSVP is requested.

Updated: U.S. Highway Reopened to Controlled Traffic

_The following was provided by Caltrans on Monday, April 4 at 11 a.m._ ROUTE 101 SOUTHERN HUMBOLDT UPDATE Eureka – Currently, Route 101 approximately 60 miles south of Eureka is open to one-way controlled traffic and motorists should expect 30-minute delays. Caltrans is pleased to announce that by Tuesday morning, April 5, the highway will open to one lane in each direction 24 hours a day. Motorists should anticipate minor traffic slowdowns.

Humboldt State University’s student-run publications, The Lumberjack and the Osprey, have been on a hot streak lately, picking up a handful of awards and an equipment grant for $900 from the California Newspaper Publishers Association (CNPA).
