CSU Faces Unprecedented Budget Cuts

The California State University received a $650 million cut to its 2011-12 budget Thursday and could face an additional $100 million reduction if state revenue forecasts are not met.

2011-12 State Budget Reduces Funding to CSU by at Least $650 Million

_The following was provided by the CSU Chancellor's Office_ The 2011-12 budget will reduce state funding to the California State University by at least $650 million and proposes an additional mid-year cut of $100 million if state revenue forecasts are not met. A $650 million cut reduces General Fund support for the university to $2.1 billion and will represent a 23 percent year over year cut to the system. An additional cut of $100 million would reduce CSU funding to $2.0 billion and represent a 27 percent year-to-year reduction in state support.

County Coroner Confirms Student Death

Officials at Humboldt State University were notified June 29 by the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office that it had positively identified a body recovered earlier in the day from the Trinity River as that of Jian Kang, 21, an exchange student who was reported swept away June 19 while attending a birthday celebration at Tish Tang Creek Campground.

It is a shame that the legislature was unable to reach a compromise that would have kept taxes at current levels and prevented further massive cuts to the public’s universities.

Student Missing After River Accident

Humboldt State University is working closely with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department concerning a missing international student who was reportedly swept away in the Trinity River across from Tish Tang Creek Campground, Hoopa, at about 4:30 p.m., Sunday, June 19. The search continues today.

Emeritus Fisheries Professor George Allen: 1923-2011

Dr. George H. Allen died on May 9, 2011 at the age of 87. He was born August 16, 1923, in Kusnacht, Switzerland where his father was a U.S. Consul. His mother was a watercolor artist and avid tennis player. When George was four years old, his father was transferred to Calgary, Canada where he resided until he attended the University of Wyoming. George completed his undergraduate degree after serving three years in the United States military. He is a World War II Veteran. He completed his Master's and Doctorate studies at the University of Washington in 1956. During his last year at the "U Dub," he met and married Beverly Robinson, "that beautiful red headed woman who lived next door," and moved to Humboldt County to begin a 30+ year career at Humboldt State University (HSU) as a Fisheries professor.

CSU Leaders Meet with Governor Brown To Advocate Against Additional Budget Cuts

HSU Education Faculty Member Named Outstanding Teacher

Shannon Morago, an instructor in Humboldt State University’s School of Education, is one of five teachers chosen to receive an Outstanding Teacher of America award from the Carlston Family Foundation. Recipients are selected based on nominations the foundation receives from former students. Morago’s nominator was a former chemistry and biology student Morago taught Six Rivers Charter High School in Arcata, Calif.

Governor's May Revision Ties $1 Billion CSU Cut to Tax Extensions

_The following was provided by the CSU Chancellor's Office_ Governor Brown's May Revision of the state budget proposes an additional reduction of $500 million in state funding support for the California State University, bringing the total budget reduction to $1 billion, if his proposal for temporary tax extensions is rejected. That would represent a 36 percent year-over-year reduction in state funding for the largest public university system in the country with more than 412,000 students. The legislature had earlier approved an initial $500 million cut in state support to the CSU for the 2011-2012 fiscal year that starts July 1.

Humboldt State University is among four schools sharing a $250,000 Gates Foundation grant awarded to CSU Northridge for a curriculum project aimed at bolstering mathematics success rates.

Associated Students Announces Election Results

Byan Kelly is the new Associated Student President following a run-off election held April 27 and 28. Kelly received 59 percent of the ballots cast, or a total of 327 votes. Kelly is a senior majoring in Political Science.

Humboldt State University Cycling Club racer Traci Kroll earned a spot on the coveted winner's podium at the Collegiate Cycling National Road Race Championships in Madison, Wisc. this weekend. Kroll finished fifth in the National Championship Criterium, on Sunday. Incredible, considering this was Kroll's first time at National Championships.
