HSU Bookstore Launches Textbook Rentals

_The HSU Bookstore recently debuted its full-fledged book rental program. We asked student writer Desiree Perez to try the new program for herself and report back. Here’s what she found._ Students searching for affordable textbooks can now stop scouring the Internet for deals. This semester they may find the most affordable option on campus at the HSU Bookstore. In addition to its other money-saving efforts, the bookstore is now offering textbook rentals.

CSU Employees Not Impacted by Governor's Furlough Order

_The following was provided by the California State University Chancellor's Office._ In response to Governor Schwarzenegger's signing today of an executive order directing state agencies as of August 1 to reinstate three furlough days per month for employees until a new budget is passed, California State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed reiterated that CSU employees will not be subject to furloughs.

Campus Street Closures

Harpst and Rossow streets, including their intersection, will be closed for paving from 6 a.m. Friday, July 30, through noon Saturday, July 31, in connection with College Creek Apartments construction.

HSU Gains Reaccreditation Through 2019

Humboldt State University has been reaccredited through academic year 2019 by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), which certifies the quality and effectiveness of colleges and universities in California, Hawaii, Guam and the Pacific Basin.

Trustees Vote to Increase Student Fees

_The following update was provided by the CSU Chancellor’s Office._ The California State University Board of Trustees today voted to raise student fees by 5 percent for undergraduates and graduate and professional programs. The State University Fee will be $4,230 for full-time undergraduate students in fall 2010, a $204 increase over last year.

Emeritus Professor Carl Leland (Lee) Barlow Dead at 96

Carl Leland (Lee) Barlow was born August 30, 1913 in Tucumcari, New Mexico and passed away on June 15 in Eureka, Calif., at the age of 96. Lee had always planned to become a medical doctor but received many awards and a scholarship to Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio. He received a Masters Degree at the University of Iowa. Lee married Kathryn Coates in 1942. He enlisted in the Navy and became the director of the Blue Jacket Choir in Lake Forest, Illinois.

Marine Lab Offers Summer Program

Registration has begun for the HSU Marine Lab’s summer children’s program. This year’s program with the theme of Life Under the Sea will be offered for those students entering the 1st through 4th or 5th through 8th grade in the fall. There will be two sessions at the Marine Laboratory from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The first session is for those students in 1st – 4th grades and starts Monday, July 12 and ends on Friday, July 16. Session two for students in 5th – 8th grades starts Monday July 26th and ends Friday July 30th. Fee per session is $70. Pre registration is required. Registration and consent forms are available from the Marine Lab website http://www.humboldt.edu/marinelab/.

Redwood Region Falls Short on Breast Care

More than 25 percent of Redwood Coast women surveyed are unscreened for breast cancer, and low-income women are especially at risk, according to a new analysis by Humboldt State University’s California Center for Rural Policy.

CSU Employee Update, June 7

_The following update was provided by the CSU Chancellor’s Office._ h3. Smith Appointed Executive Vice Chancellor for CSU System Dr. Ephraim P. Smith, vice president for Academic Affairs at California State University, Fullerton, has been appointed as executive vice chancellor and chief academic officer for the CSU system. Smith will assume his new post July 1, following the retirement of Dr. Jeronima Echeverria.
