CSU Employee Update – Feb. 9, 2011

_The following was provided by the CSU Chancellor’s Office_ California State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed told lawmakers this week that he agreed with Gov. Jerry Brown's decision to immediately address the state’s fiscal crisis, but stressed that continued reductions in higher education funding will stall the state’s economic recovery and ultimately place its future at risk.

Campus Rallies Behind Students Displaced by Apartment Fire

Following a devastating fire that gutted two structures at the Tea Garden Apartment Complex, the Humboldt State University campus is rallying behind the displaced residents to provide them with temporary housing and other necessities.

HSU Assisting Students Displaced by Fire Near Campus

Ten Humboldt State University students were displaced from their apartments in downtown Arcata after a fire broke out at about 2:25 a.m., Wednesday at the Tea Garden Apartments. The apartments are located about six blocks from campus at the corner of 11th and F streets.

CSU Employee Update - Budget

The following was provided by the CSU Chancellor’s Office Proposed State Budget Presents Challenges for CSU Gov. Brown’s state budget proposal allocates $2.29 billion to the CSU for 2011-2012, down from $2.77 billion for 2010-11—and the lowest budget for the CSU in 12 years, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Budget Robert Turnage reported this week to the CSU Board of Trustees. What is even more challenging is that the CSU is serving nearly 70,000 more students, he noted.

Humboldt State University has developed an initial plan to prepare entering freshmen sooner for college math and English, fulfilling California State University’s Early Start initiative.

Hackett Weighs Latest in Environmental Economics

Humboldt State University Economics Professor Steve Hackett has produced a new and completely revised edition of his wide-ranging textbook, “Environmental and Natural Resources Economics.”

Spring Book Circles for Faculty & Staff

In order to extend and enrich campus conversations about student success, the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching – in collaboration with the Faculty Development Office and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion – is offering faculty and staff book circles.

HSU Lecturer Surveys Ecological Research

Humboldt State University lecturer and alum (’88, ’92) Jeffrey Dunk will deliver a free public lecture on conservation and learning on Thursday, January 27, at 5 p.m. in Van Duzer Theatre. An informal reception in the theatre lobby will follow.

Social Work Grad Degree Goes Online

Online courses offered this coming fall semester will pave the way for the future launch of HSU’s first fully online degree program: the Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work (BSW). In addition to creating greater access for undergraduate students, the online bachelor’s degree will tentatively be joined by an online Master of Arts in Social Work (MSW) in spring 2012.

There is an old pirate legend about a forgotten place on the Trinity River named Sailor’s Bar. The place has all but disappeared in the riverside undergrowth, but historical memory of the saga has been newly revived—and revised—by a Humboldt State University undergraduate.

New Parking Permit Dispensers Coming to Campus

Five new parking permit dispensers have been installed in several parking lots across Humboldt State University’s campus as of Tuesday, Jan. 18, the first day of the spring semester. In addition to increasing the number of dispensers from four to five on campus, the new units accept debit and credit cards and coins.

Governor’s Budget Proposal Includes Deep Cuts for the CSU The California State University will receive a $500 million—or 18 percent—reduction in state support in the 2011-12 budget proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown today. Dealing with an estimated $26 billion budget deficit, Brown said, “The cuts will be painful, requiring sacrifice from every sector of the state.”

_The following was provided by the California State University Chancellor’s Office_ h3. New Trustee Appointed to CSU Board Hsing Kung has been appointed to the California State University Board of Trustees. The appointment was made Dec. 30, 2010 by outgoing Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Campus Awarded Nearly $75G for Service Learning

Humboldt State University has been awarded three state and federal grants totaling $74,000 to finance academically-related service learning in the North Coast community. Service learning integrates classroom study with hands-on community service projects.

A collaborative effort of Humboldt State and NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service has begun to bridge a major historical gap in monitoring the northern section of the California Coastal System.

McKinleyville Pen Pals ‘Judge’ HSU Math Students

Fifth-graders at Morris Elementary School in McKinleyville will make a field trip Tuesday morning, Dec. 7, to meet with their semester-long pen pals: aspiring elementary school teachers at Humboldt State University who will give hands-on math presentations to their young protégés.

Humboldt State University’s JackPass Program, which allows students unlimited free rides on all Humboldt County buses, celebrated its 1 millionth rider on Thursday with the arrival of the 2:24 p.m. Arcata & Mad River Transit’s Red Route.
