Arcata Botanist Jennifer Wheeler Wins National Wildflower Conservation Award

Jennifer Wheeler, botanist with the BLM's Arcata Field Office, has received the Karl Urban Celebrating Wildflowers Award, a national honor recognizing her exemplary work conserving native plants through creativity, community involvement, volunteer programs and educational efforts. Composers Concert Includes Deborah Clasquin Memorial

A program of new compositions by HSU Department of Music faculty and students, presents an “eclectic array of styles and compositional techniques for ambient synth music, dancers, piano, voice and various chamber groups,” according to Dr. Brian Post, HSU professor of Music Theory and Composition. It will be performed on Saturday, April 4 in Fulkerson Recital Hall at HSU.

Natural History Museum Seeks Artists

The HSU Natural History Museum is looking for artists interested helping the museum by decorating a three-legged stool. Proceeds from the stools will give the museum "A Leg to Stand On" when sold by silent auction at a 20th anniversary fundraiser, the first ever, "Prehistoric Ball” on October 24, 2009.

Campus Nets Big Stem Cell Grant

The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) has approved $17.5 million in funding for training in stem cell research at universities and research institutions across the state, with an anticipated $1.6 million slated for Humboldt State University.

HSU Nabs Eight Wins in Logging Sports

Humboldt State University’s Logging Sports Club racked up eight victories, four second places and seven third places in contests at the 2009 Association of Western Forestry Clubs Conclave, which was held for the first time in tandem with the Redwood Region Logging Conference, March 19-21, at Redwood Acres Fairgrounds. CSU Trustees Endorse Props 1A-1E

The California State University Board of Trustees has voted to endorse Propositions 1A through 1E, scheduled for the May 19 statewide special election. The measures were adopted by the Legislature with a two-thirds vote and supported by the Governor as part of the 2009-10 budget package. Lt. Governor John Garamendi, an ex officio member of the Board of Trustees, cast the only vote against the motion.

Humboldt Hosts Sustainability Retreat

HSU’s environmental clubs and organizations will be hosting the second annual Humboldt State Sustainability Retreat, on Friday, April 3 through Sunday, April 5. Students from Chico State, University of Oregon, College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State will be in attendance.

HSU Dancer Receives Top Honors

Cheri Anchondo, who is a double major in Dance (Interdisciplinary Studies) and Geography, had her dance selected as one of the top 10 dances (out of 66 dances) in the Northwest Region. Anchondo’s dance was featured in a Gala concert that closed the conference activities.

First Street Presents the HSU Printmakers Show

Humboldt State University’s First Street Gallery presents The HSU Printmakers Show from April 4 through May 17. This exhibition consists of a wide variety of mediums such as woodcuts, etching, engravings, lithographs and serigraphy, all covering a broad array of subjects. The contributing artists are students and alumni of Professor Sarah Whorf’s Honors Printmaking classes at Humboldt State University. The exhibition is billed by First Street Gallery as a clear demonstration of the excellent career preparation that Humboldt State University offers its Art Majors.

The Depravities of War: Monumental Woodcut Prints by Sandow Birk

Humboldt State University’s First Street Gallery presents ??The Depravities of War: Monumental Woodcut Prints?? by Sandow Birk April 4 through May 17. Birk’s work focuses on social and political issues concerning contemporary society, often employing allegorical themes with art historical references. Through the use of the classical technique of woodcut prints, this series focuses on Birk’s perspective on the Iraq war, as filtered through the mass media.

Deborah Clasquin 1957-2009

A classical pianist known for her powerful performances and sensitive artistry, Deborah Clasquin, a Professor of Music and senior member of the keyboard faculty at Humboldt State University died in Arcata on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at age 52. Deborah remained sweet and energetic despite a furious battle against cancer diagnosed in October, 2007.
