Pacific Coast region wins 2009 World Geography Bowl

Following an evening of intense competition against teams from throughout the U.S. and Canada, the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers (APCG) team took top honors at this year’s World Geography Bowl Competition in Las Vegas on March 24. Humboldt State University was well-represented in the competition, as the team included three alumni and one current faculty member.

Outstanding Student Nods Include Arcata Grad

Arcata – Dedicated to “Students Who Make a Difference,” the 71 nominees for this year’s Humboldt State University Outstanding Student Awards include Ranjan Hatch of Arcata, who was recently named a 2009-2010 Fulbright Scholar to teach English, math and science in Malaysia.

New Club Boosts African School

A new Associated Students club at Humboldt State University has collected 137 hand tools, a large toolbox and a full complement of drill bits for students at the University of Livingstonia in the Republic of Malawi, a nation of 14 million people in southern Africa who are among the world’s poorest.

HSU Model Arab League Receives Multiple Honors

HSU Geography major Ted Bliss was elected Secretary General of the 2010 Model Arab League. Bliss joined a delegation of 30 students from Dr. Paul Blank's Geography of the Middle East class and the Arabic Peace and Culture Club.

HSU Student Named Fulbright Scholar

Arcata – Humboldt State University graduating senior Ranjan Hatch, a Biology major, has won a scholarship to serve as a university English teaching assistant in Malaysia through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

Journalism Students Bolster Press Freedom

Humboldt State journalism students collaborated this semester with the Student Press Law Center, a national legal assistance agency that supports high school and college press freedom, on records requests that tested the responsiveness of more than 100 colleges and universities. HSU was one of three schools—the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee and the University of North Texas were the others—that sent letters to 95 public and 20 private institutions seeking documents on student disciplinary complaints and cases.

Winnie (’69), Alameda County Counsel and legal advisor to international governments.

Arcata Botanist Jennifer Wheeler Wins National Wildflower Conservation Award

Jennifer Wheeler, botanist with the BLM's Arcata Field Office, has received the Karl Urban Celebrating Wildflowers Award, a national honor recognizing her exemplary work conserving native plants through creativity, community involvement, volunteer programs and educational efforts. Composers Concert Includes Deborah Clasquin Memorial

A program of new compositions by HSU Department of Music faculty and students, presents an “eclectic array of styles and compositional techniques for ambient synth music, dancers, piano, voice and various chamber groups,” according to Dr. Brian Post, HSU professor of Music Theory and Composition. It will be performed on Saturday, April 4 in Fulkerson Recital Hall at HSU.

Natural History Museum Seeks Artists

The HSU Natural History Museum is looking for artists interested helping the museum by decorating a three-legged stool. Proceeds from the stools will give the museum "A Leg to Stand On" when sold by silent auction at a 20th anniversary fundraiser, the first ever, "Prehistoric Ball” on October 24, 2009.
