Putting Arcata Community Forest on the Map (With Video)

Last year, when nature lover João Paulo Curti left Brazil and came to HSU as an exchange student, he immediately took to the Arcata Community Forest. The Forestry major set off on his bike, and with a video camera strapped to his helmet, took shots of what he saw. He shared the footage online to show his family and friends back home what he was doing–and the stunning place he was doing it–in his spare time.

HSU Greenhouse Gas Emissions Drop Below 1990 Levels

Electricity use accounts for nearly one quarter of the greenhouse gas emissions generated at Humboldt State, while transportation emissions from business travel, commuting, and solid waste disposal are responsible for over one third of the total. Those are two of the key findings from a comprehensive inventory of HSU’s greenhouse gas emissions, recently prepared by HSU’s Office of Sustainability.

KHSU's BBC Programming Goes Live Feb. 1

Beginning Feb. 1, radio listeners in Humboldt County can hear news and analysis of world events from the BBC World Service on KHSU-BBC 24 hours a day. BBC programming will go on the air at 103.3 FM in McKinleyville and at 90.1 FM in Ferndale. Listeners with HD radio can also hear the BBC on 90.5 HD-2, one of KHSU’s HD radio channels.

A Carnival of Welcome to the HSU Spring Semester

HSU Music’s spring semester Welcome Concert goes big, as a total of 16 faculty, staff and friends perform music from Bach to Gershwin, Schubert to Miles Davis, including a dozen players combining on the playful “Carnival of the Animals,” on Saturday, February 7 in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

The Royal Chicano Air Force: Arte para la Raza

Humboldt State University's First Street Gallery presents a selection of prints and posters from the 1970s and 1980s by the Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF). The RCAF is a Sacramento, Calif. based artist collective founded in 1970 by José Montoya and Esteban Villa. The art within this collection encapsulates the early, heady days of activism by the United Farm Workers movement in California.

Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection

Humboldt State University First Street Gallery presents, "Chicanitas: Small Paintings from the Cheech Marin Collection." Chicanitas, is a traveling exhibition of small to medium-sized paintings selected from the acclaimed, private art collection of actor-entertainer, Cheech Marin. The collection is a vibrant, compelling selection of art offering a window into contemporary Chicano culture. The exhibition runs Tuesday, Jan. 27 through Sunday, March 8.

Study Will Investigate High Death Rate from Breast Cancer in Humboldt County

A $217,102 grant has been awarded to the California Center for Rural Policy (CCRP) at Humboldt State University and the Breast and GYN Health Project (BGHP) (formerly the Humboldt Community Breast Health Project) to research differences between breast cancer death rates in Humboldt County and the rest of state. The 18-month study, “The Rural Breast Cancer Survival Study,” will examine factors associated with higher death rates from breast cancer in Humboldt County over the past 20 years.
