First Street Hosts Young Alums

Humboldt State University First Street Gallery presents Young Alumni 2007: Works by Recent HSU Graduates, on exhibit July 5 through August 5. The Gallery bills the exhibition as clear evidence of the excellent career preparation HSU provides art majors.

Voices II: A Community Mosaic

The HSU Junior Social Work Methods Class invites the community to attend the free, culminating event of its spring semester when a variety of groups will have their voices heard, representing the community's older adults, youth from various backgrounds, young parents, veterans, and people with mental health issues, on Tues., May 8, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Kate Buchanan Room.

Now This is Heavy Metal

In their combined spring concert, the HSU Percussion Ensemble and the celebrated Calypso Band provide a new definition of “heavy metal” when they perform in the Van Duzer Theatre on Sat., April 28 at 8:00 p.m.

Fast-Paced Comedy in Play Festival

What goes on in a young woman's mind about the guy she’s been kissing? How can a couple of secret agents save the world? What prompts a boy to realize his mother doesn't love him? Is there really a reason to get off the couch and go to work? Can you ever be free, or is freedom just another box? These are some of the questions that eight HSU student playwrights address in the fast-paced form of the ten minute play.

Library Shares 'Power of Art'

Humboldt State University Library, in conjunction with KEET-TV, Morris Graves Museum of Art and Humboldt Arts Council (MGMA), Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), and North Coast Preparatory Academy (NPA), is offering outreach in the local community through screenings, discussions, workshops, and cultural events beginning this June.

HSU Stages Dido & Aeneas Opera

With Sarah Benzinger, a Humboldt State junior from Eureka playing one of the title roles, 29 singers together with members of the Humboldt Symphony present the short opera Dido and Aeneas on Friday. and Saturday nights, Apr. 13 and 14, at 8:00 p.m. in Fulkerson Recital Hall.

Student Art Exhibit Opens April 12

Humboldt State University's Reese Bullen Gallery presents the 2007 Annual Juried Student Exhibition. This year's juror, Richard Peterson, a nationally renowned fine artist, is selecting the art for the exhibit. Peterson is department chair and teaches drawing and lithography at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, California.

Suffusion: Dances From the Heart

The perennially popular spring dance concert by HSU students and faculty opens this year on April 12 in the Van Duzer Theatre. Some 50 dancers will participate in a dozen original dance pieces collected under the title of “"Suffusion."

"How the Ink Feels" Exhibition

HOW THE INK FEELS, a collection of letterpress broadsides created by well known writers, artists and printers, will be on display at the HSU Library from Apr. 20 to June 4.

HSU Music Season Flowers in April

April is the last full month of the University school year and the HSU Music Department has a crowded concert calendar, which will conclude the first weekend of May. Performances are based on the class work and experience HSU students gained throughout the academic year.

Oaxaca-Humboldt Print Exchange

Humboldt State University First Street Gallery presents The Oaxaca-Humboldt Print Exchange Apr. 7 through May 20. Featured artists include Shinzaburo Takeda and his students from la Universidad Autonoma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca (UABJO), in Mexico and Professor Sarah Whorf and her students from Humboldt State University (HSU). This cultural exchange between the two universities and their communities features a wide variety of printmaking processes. Humboldt State University and UABJO participate in a number of intercollegiate exchange programs.

Cloud 9 Challenges Gender Stereotypes

British playwright Caryl Churchill’s acclaimed comedy of gender politics initially appeared in the late 1970s, with its first American performance in the early 1980s. Since then it has become a classic, performed in regional and university theatres across America and in other parts of the world.

Jonathan Higgins at Reese Bullen Gallery

Humboldt State University Reese Bullen Gallery welcomes the return of Jonathan Higgins in Full Circle: Recent Prints from Manneken Press. Higgins, an alumnus of HSU, Master Printer, co-founder of Manneken Press and fine artist returns with prints by eight artists who have worked with him at Manneken Press. The work is executed in both experimental and classic printmaking techniques and includes a range of aesthetic styles.

Library Exhibit on Forest Communities

The exhibit "Northwestern California Forest Communities" continues at the HSU Library through January 29, celebrating the Library's contributions to Calisphere, an exciting new web site launched by the California Digital Library in August. Calisphere is a free public gateway to thousands of primary sources that reveal the diverse history and culture of California and its role in national and world history. The HSU Library is one of 19 California libraries selected in 2005-06 through the California State Library to digitize 225 of local historical documents to add to Calisphere

Voice and Orchestra Make Sacred Music

"The cross-fertilization of instrument and voice has given the world some of it's most memorable music," commented Kenneth Ayoob, HSU Professor of Music and Conductor of the Humboldt Symphony. This evocative combination will be exemplified on Friday, December 8 and again on Sunday, December 10, when the Humboldt Symphony joins forces with the Humboldt University Singers and Humboldt Chorale to perform a 20th century "Gloria" for the sacred season.

Madrigal Singers Cap Big HSU Music Weekend

It's a mad Madrigal world as the HSU Madrigal Singers in Renaissance costume present a program of traditional carols, madrigals, solos and duets to usher in the holiday season on Sunday, December 3rd at 8 PM in the Fulkerson Recital Hall on the HSU campus.

Theatrical Comedy "School For Scandal" Opens Nov. 30

Things haven't changed a lot since the first performance of Richard Sheridan's The School for Scandal in the late eighteenth century. Surrounded by war and revolution, the smart set of London still devoted considerable energy to gossip, tabloid journalism, and bedroom intrigue.

Students Produce 12-Artist Exhibition

Humboldt State University First Street Gallery announces "A Holiday Invitational Exhibition" opening November 28 and continuing through December 22. Featured in the show will be artwork by twelve artists from California's North Coast, who work in diverse styles and mediums.

First Street: Angels Over Eureka

Humboldt State University First Street Gallery is set to open a new exhibit: "Angels," a one-woman show by local artist Gwen Thoele. Her oil paintings will be on display November 28 through December 22, 2006.

Cindy Moyer Presents the Killer B's

B there or B square? "The theme for this concert is 'B' composers," said Cindy Moyer, violinist and HSU Professor of Music. "We have music of the classic triumvirate of great masters: Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, plus the 20th century English composer, Benjamin Britten."

From Sublime to Ridiculous with Opera Workshop

From Sondheim's The Frogs to Mozart's The Magic Flute, and from Gilbert and Sullivan to a contemporary spoof on dreams of stardom, the HSU Opera Workshop student singers present an eclectic program of selections from musical theatre, opera, and operetta, Friday, November 3 and again on Sunday, November 5 in the Fulkerson Recital Hall on the HSU campus in Arcata. Both shows start at 8 p.m.

HSU Alum's Play Premieres Oct. 12

"Range of Light," a new play by HSU alum Wendy J. Williams ('02), premieres Thursday through Saturday, Oct.12-14, and Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 19-21, at Humboldt State's Van Duzer Theatre. The new curtain time is 7:30 p.m.

Sneak Preview of "Dispensing Cannabis" documentary

Dispensing Cannabis: The California Story is a one-hour documentary film, produced and directed by Humboldt State University film professor Ann Alter with a collaborative team of HSU students. It will be presented to the public for the first time in a free sneak preview at the Minor Theatre in Arcata on Thursday, October 5.
